I love Eddie Van Halen's work. But watching Doyle right now reaffirm's my belief that there isn't a "best" or "greatest" guitarist. Just many men and women who can bring us great unique and original enjoyment from this musical instrument and we can all be grateful for that.

You have a new fan, brother! I have a masters in music education and have been teaching elementary students for 32 years. I’m a multi-instrumentalist, a composer, and a song writer. Of all things, Eddie’s keyboard playing made me want to become a musician. Lately, my passion is playing hymns on classical guitar. I really get what you are doing and am absolutely blown away! You’ve honored Eddie and you’ve honored the Lord. And you’ve blessed me! Thank you.

You are one of there rare few people who ever gave him a guitar pick of your own...that is so cool. Plus, that thing he said to you....incredible. Reminded me of reading what people would say about the way Robert Johnson played, “not like a guitar”...more like a piano...plus a harp, in your case. That’s what I was thinking.

Absolutely beautiful. I was gutted to hear of Eddie’s passing, he was a childhood hero and although it’s overused, he did change the face of music. No one sounded like VH, none (especially in the 70’s) played, had a sound or had melded those rhythmic elements to rock. I may be a thumb picker now but Eddie is still there at the beginning of my journey. Beautiful tribute Sir.

What EVH did for guitar was more than anyone else other than Jimi Hendrix - and even that one is debatable. When I was a kid, Eddie Van Halen was basically a real life superhero.

@@shred5 Him and Randy Rhoads (who, kinda like Hendrix, never really had enough time to show us what they really had planned) stood out to me from that 70's-80's transition (and the death of guitar music in the coming decade or so). I can see what Eddie would have admired in your playing style. There's a precision and a finesse that is required to play this type of guitar without mistakes. There's no effect to mask a slight error. So to use the right hand as you do is much the same thing Eddie did, just in a different genre of the instrument. It's a deeper knowledge of the instrument that goes way beyond a basic understanding of the fretboard.

Agree with all these comments. It is really interesting with instruments that when a good player plays, they sound like themselves. Doesn't matter much (if at all) what they are playing on. Love Tommy Emmanuel, seen him in concert many times, played with him at a clinic once. Doyle plays the guitar cleaner and less hard than Tommy. He is more like Chet (another guitar hero of mine). God Bless everyone out there!

I got a T-shirt recently that says "I play the guitar because I enjoy it...not because I am good at it!" After playing for 52 years I know that I will never have the talent of the great players like Doyle, Eddie, Dan Fogelberg, etc. but it brings me pleasure and I am still trying to get better. In my 50's I battled cancer for two years and sometimes just picking up my guitar and playing a little helped me get through the chemo and surgeries. Reading the comments about who is the best is so mind numbing....every one brings something to the table....so why not sit back and enjoy it!
