Great trumpet player. My late mother saw him at his annual new years show several years go and got his autograph for me. Jack was friends with his dental technician for years and would invite him to his new years concert for years. Always loved his playing and beautiful smokey sound. He played on art peppers great album smack up. He started out recording on the jazz west label in the mid-fifties and in the early two thousands had his own label and some excellent recordings with very good musicians. Thanks for mentioning jack in this video. He was an excellent musician on the west coast.

He was my fathers favorite jazz guy. I thought he was black my whole childhood. His " you fascinate me so " is the best version ever!

You obviously never saw him live. You admit you have never seen "Trying To Get Good". Canterbury Records I bought 5 copies. I went to a viewing of the movie with Q&A after with Doug McIntire

I am looking at him on, “The Girl With Something Extra,” and he is so engaging in his interpretation of his character. I wonder how much drug usage influence, if any, Stan Getz had on Mr. Sheldon? Stan Getz turned many a jazz artist onto illegal drugs - Very bad dude and influence. I want see Mr. Jack’s documentary. RIP Mr. Sheldon.

RIP Jack. I remember a bit from Merv Griffin's show where Jack sat down at the piano ( who knew he played?) and sang a mildly ridiculous love ballad which featured lines like "I'll still love you... even after radioactive gas burns our lungs..." (or a rough approximation of that). Anyone remember this? At one point during the performance, he tosses off a big dramatic arpeggio to everyone's surprise, and he shouts out while still playing, "Six years of lessons!" It got a good laugh. I would love to see that clip on KZbin but I can't find it anywhere. Addendum: okay, I found the name of the song... it's "Atomic Bomb"... and it was chlorine gas, not radioactive gas. My bad! Still can't find the Merv clip anywhere.
