I watched the documentary of Yacht Rock it had it moments about the musicians and record I forgot about from back then , Growing up with music didn't make feel nostalgia about it. It's great for people who didn't grow up with the music. Sure maybe it was done trying to get a cash grab for records of this era. It was like watch standing the shadow of Motown that was done better. Also maybe go back and watch 20 Feet from Stardom, As for today music I take or leave it, I do like some new Artists and trust me I older than the demographic that is target to.

I have to say this. You really should've made the investment to see the movie before doing this video. There *is* a story arc in the movie as 'Yacht Rock' being a thread that is woven into all types of musical genres that spanned from the early 70s into today. One major subject that none of the clips you've seen touched on is how this music (and most of the musicians) fell out of favor commercially in the late 80s until the Hip Hop/Rap community started picking up on the songs and sampling them. That's the part of the movie that really peaked my interest, because that thread leads into the Neo-Soul/RnB movement that's going on right now (Thundercat working with Kenny Loggins/Michael McD, etc) Hip Hop introduced that music to a new generation in the late 80s/early 90s and the momentum is still being carried over even now. There's even a 'Yacht Soul' Sirius XM channel now, which really surprised me! The movie was a bigger thing than just guys opining over their music careers and wanting credit - it showed how this music influence spanned the decades and popped up in places you'd never thought it would. It's really a good documentary that you should watch. And for context, I'm also a Jazz fan who grew up with this music when it was out in the 70s/early 80s and was a fan of early Hip Hop/Rap in the 80s and early 90s before it went 'gansta' 👎🏾👎🏾 Cheers!!! Edited to add - And now I'm a new subscriber! 👍🏾👍🏾

Thanks for this. I'm an adult who in my youth had to endure the dreadful period when so-called Yacht Rock ruled the rock FM radio airwaves. Call it character building. I therefore enjoyed the gentle poking fun in the HBO documentary. The movie didn't take itself very seriously, which I consider the right attitude going in. A little later I watched Rick Beato tearing his hair out over the film, because the backup studio people were "really good musicians". I watch Rick faithfully, but I had to laugh at the way he blew a gasket over the supposed desecration of this after the fact genre. Lighten up Rick.

The term Yacht rocks has been around since the 1990's if Im not mistaken. Technically it suggests music for people who own yachts or it's just a nonsensical way to categorize music yet none of the record labels use it to describe their releases. Jimmy Buffet did some videos on a yacht, he was on ABC Records. Steely Dan was also on that label, does it mean they were yacht rock? The term means nothing and there is no so called controversy as you stated. People either like the artist or they don't and they sure don't care how it's categorized. It seems that youtube channel hosts want to find controversy in whatever to drive people to their channels. It's getting boring frankly and Rick Beato was correct that it is a meaningless term. Donald Fagen's response when asked to be part of the doc was great and appropriate. It is a insulting term.

Jimi Hendrix never referred to his music as "psychedelic". An interviewer once asked him "what do you call the kind of music you do", and Hendrix said "..I don't know, we are trying to do like a freaky blues type of thing.." I've never heard Pink Floyd or the Beatles (1966 and later) refer to their music during the Sgt Pepper era as "psychedelic music". Someone already mentioned Nirvana having the same issue with "Grunge". I actually put those Artists mentioned in my computer as Soft Rock so if I do a search, the computer takes me to Christopher Cross, Al Stewart, Steely Dan, Seals & Crofts, Michael McDonald, etc. If you remember, record stores labeled their record bins "Rock", "Soul/R&B", "Jazz", "Classical", and "Pop". So, as you see, it's somewhat a marketing strategy so people can find what they want. However, they could have just listed everything alphabetically without the labels and maybe sold more records by someone just seeing a cover of a Pop or R&B album had they not chose a certain section to browse. Ok. Enough small talk. I'm out!

Beato overreacted ..the term YACHT ROCK has now put a lot more money in the pocket of all those musicians who made those tunes a LONG TIME AGO. Sure its a silly name for the genre or whatever is close to that 70’s 80’s jazz rock dance music that continues to be popular. I watched the HBO doc….it is ok …it is sometimes boring sometimes interesting doc…they are not insulting any musicians! Like I said it is making them popular and at least some more money off of old records…a lot I like ,a lot I can pass on but the musicians were great and the Yacht Rock name does not make them any less great…love Beato but he was railing about nothing really. The Documentary is helping the musicians not demeaning them!

The whole stink is that the term "Yacht Rock" is just straight up derogatory. Summing up this great music with a stereotype insinuating that the main consumer would be a rich, white dude on his yacht, is insulting. It is just indicative of the times we live in, where all rich, white people are considered ignorant and evil. Forget that this is some of the best, most complex, thoughtful and beautifully harmonic rock music that has ever existed.

I think the issue is simply the term "Yacht Rock". I know one can say what's the big deal it's just a name someone coined but it's a pejorative like "Cocktail Music" or "Elevator Music". Donald Fagan was right to be upset with Steely Dan's music being lumped into that category.

The interest in music made you become a nerd and read carefully the album covers to see if your favourite musicians were on the vinyl record you were interested in. I understand very well Rick Beato's frustration with the concept of Yacht Rock! But OK; I see this discussion from a musician's perspective and as a non-American!

You will never ever see any kind of book, newspaper, magazine, interview, tv show, movie from that area the late 1970s to the early 80s refer to the term yacht rock at all. There is no reference to it. This is what is called revisionists history. Some dude decided to write a book and create a film documentary and create the term yacht rock. You could make a case for the use of the word grundge rock was used for the sounds of bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden's. However most of the groups like Nirvana didn't like the term. The term was applied at the time it was being released not after the fact. Again some dude came up with a marketing term to use for yacht rock and made money. Its so lame it was originally refered to as adult contemporary or contemporary music.

They didn't call classic rock then either. I think the term and those Yacht Rock low budget movies were brilliant. I like a lot of the music but it's also funny to laugh at, something like the way the Spinal Tap movie made fun of the entire hard rock industry. Loved that music too though many of those bands didn't like the movie, because they thought they were the inspiration behind it.
