My brother John Paul Fieg passed away on May 2, 2015 in Honolulu, Hawaii at age 73.
John graduated from Notre Dame University, and then earned a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University.
He was among the first to answer President Kennedy's call and join the Peace Corps in 1966, living for two years in rural northeast Thailand. After returning to the US he attended The George Washington University in Washington DC where he earned a law (Juris Doctor) degree.
Keeping with the Peace Corps tradition, John led an unconventional life, always in the service of others. Upon receiving the law degree, he practiced law on the Zuni Indian Reservation in New Mexico for two years. Then for a time he returned to Thailand, eventually settling in Hawaii where he tutored students in English as a second language for 30 years.
While in Hawaii John took voice lessons for 15 years at the University of Hawaii, and I know the music and the self-expression were very important to him. I can picture him belting out the lyrics... please take a few moments to watch my tribute.
From John Fieg's Peace Corps diary:
“No matter how distressing things may seem here, I must remember that it is possible to rise above this, to go my own way, in companionship with better men of different times and places.”
