LaTanya Junior, As a kid I listened to the Dells and your dads voice captivated me. He and his voice are nationals treasures and I still listen to them today. I can't even speak to this music today. Gospel and 70's R&B soul still reigns. Thanks for letting us have a piece of your father....

The greatest voices in the music industry... "Stay In My Corner"...the epic song still the family favorite and shared with my children today. Their music cannot be imitated (though many have tried), Thank you Marvin Junior and Johnny Carter for enlightening the world and giving us the Dells.

I remember the first time I saw them perform in DC back in the early 70's and I said to myself that Marvins voice is going to knock down the walls of the Warner Theater, i've never heard a stronger voice than his.

I cannot convey in any spoken words what feelings stir in me when I listen to the Dells and Marvin's lead on "The love we had". I am 59 and unfortunately never saw them in person, I know unbelievable right? But I am so very thankful for videos uploaded to KZbin because it takes me back and I can connect in a way only possible when you see the artist sing their songs. There are songs today that I listen to and sing along and feel pleasantly entertained, but I don't care what anyone says, groups and artists like the Dells, Delfonics, Chilites, Stylistics, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, MAD Lads, temptations, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, oh man I could go on and on, put out music that was the meaning of Soul Music. They didn't need all these enhancements, synthesizers, etc. They put it down live onstage with their bands and even full orchestras. They touched your very SOUL. Frankie Beverly and Maze, War. That era that I was so Blessed to be a part of produced legends, Giants and makes me so proud to be Black. I thank them all, those that have left us and those still here. What they endured to pave the way for others and to share with us their gifts from God, is truly amazing and appreciated by this woman. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

You're right the Dells were inducted into the R&R Hall of fame in 2004. Johnny Carter was inducted twice because he was originally with the Flamingo's and they were inducted in 2001. It's so nice to hear your kind passionate words about the Dells. It would be nice if they were honored as a whole while there are 3 living members who remain with us. We should never let this music or talented singers be forgotten.

Very beautifully done....I've always loved the Dells, my mother used to play, ''Make sure you have someone who loves you'', Hallways of my mind'', 'Always together'', Oh what a Night, ''Does anybody know I'm here'', ''Can't do enough'', I personally fell in love with the Dells with the song ''Teaser'' and ''They said it could'nt be done, but we did it'' , ''Superwoman'', ''Just a little love'' and ''Slow Motion'' so I too share your passion for the Mighty, Mighty Dells. I can't wait for the Compact Disc release of ''Love is Blue'' from 1969, I recently purchased ''Freedom Means'' on CD, and the song ''I miss you'' is so deep WOW! Thanks for the tribute, it's heartfelt. Too many great songs to name. Bless You.

Love Marvin Jr. and the Dells. Just watched a 1972 concert in Philly. Thank you for your tribute to one of my favorites. Stay In My Corner was very big when I was in Viet Nam, 1968. +George Webb Teddy admittedly copied Marvin Junior's voice and, as quiet as its kept, Gamble & Huff had The Dells record a complete album for them they would not release but use as a guide for the first Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes album. The highlight of Teddy's career was joining the Dells on stage and getting to sing with his mentor. My main criticism of "Cadillac Records" was their not mentioning, not only The Dells, but The Flamingos, The Moonglows, Fontella Bass, Billy Stewart or the Ramsey Lewis Trio, giving the public the impression Chess Records only dealt with blues artists.
@lcchill7 жыл бұрын
According to the people I talked to the Dells never actually recorded any of that stuff. The songs were written with the intent that they would record them but it never happened. They could not work out a deal with Chess records at the time. Teddy and Marvin were good friends and yes Marvin was his biggest influence as a singer!!
@ujimajame46017 жыл бұрын
Icchill: My source in saying The Dells recorded the material that became the first Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes was the Dells themselves when they were interviewed on the "Quiet Storm" show on WBLS NY. Unfortunately, the host, Vaughn Harper just died in 2016 but perhaps the tape of that show is still available.
