Nik Turner Tribute - Hawkwind and Beyond
26 August 1940 - 10 November 2022
Nik Turner was best known for his role in the band Hawkwind. He played on my favorite album by the band 'Warrior On The Edge of Time.
He was also a very spiritual person and firmly believed that music could be used to heal others. He just wanted to see people healthy and happy!
This video is dedicated to Nik Turner's family, friends and all fans of Hawkwind.

Thank you for this heartfelt tribute Phil. I saw Hawkwind many times starting in 1972, plus the Space Ritual Tour, Stonehenge etc. Nik and his singing, instrumentation and songs resonated with me. I also saw him in later years with his own bands. Fly high Nik, thanks for the music and experiences!

I was very lucky to have met Nik back in 1981, was at an ICU gig at Angies rock club in Wokingham…after the gig, I was having a drink, Nik came up to me, asked me how I was, did I enjoy the gig…then we sat down for about an hour chatting about this and that, he was interested in me and my life…we got talking about his time playing in Sphinx…Xitintoday ….just then he kept up, told me to wait there…next minute he came back with a tape of him playing his flute in the great pyramid in Egypt…he gave to me to enjoy, it was called Nikpyrafltamid…..how kind of him…..we chatted about lots of things Hawkwind….made my night that did…I was 19 at the time….been into Hawkwind since 1972…still love them….well Nik, you rock now with Robert Calvert and Daevid Allen….see you at the next address one day…..x

Amazing saxophonist and all round thoughtful musician. He will be sadly missed. I loved the inclusion of your quotations in your tribute. Unfortunately I have never seen them live and I must confess to only really getting deeply involved as a listener via the Dust of Time boxset. Someone once told me in the early 80s he once performed on roller skates and wore a whole manner of entertaining outfits. From some of the live CDs I've listened to Hawkwind never seemed to have a front man. They had various vocalists. I think Nik loved to be that front man with his amazing saxophony. RIP NIK.

I met an older guy in his 70s a few years back and he had painted that album cover on about a six foot canvas, nailed to wood. It looked amazing. And we became instant chums. That was about the time I had just got off a four show tour with Nik Turners Hawkwind here in the states. Thanks Nik. Stay High. 🙏❤️

From Keith Jones Christian session drummer, now retired to Cornwall. Hello Phil well done with a good tribute to Nik Turner. I once met him briefly, also a good flute and sax player. I also recorded with two members of Hawkwind, Dave Brock and Harvey Bainbridge.. I also recorded a single in 1983 with Dave Brock. Keep up the good work with all your reviews. I sent you a message a few weeks ago about Hardmeat, when my band Flying Fortress worked with them and thanks for the reply back. God Bless (KJ).

I by chance met Nik Turner in 1978 in a record shop in Margate High Street called Funhouse and Nik kindly signed a brown paper bag which was the first thing to hand “ Stay High ! Nik Turner .which has always amused me . I still have his autograph to this day . I also met Bob Calvert back in 1972 when visiting a friend in hospital where he also was a patient I was a young teenager and hadn’t then heard of Hawkwind but remember well Bob Calvert telling my friend that he had just written a new song for his band . The song turned out to be “ Silver Machine “ which made Number 3 in the Uk charts in the summer of 1972 . The rest as they say is history …..

To me, Hawkwind is a concept and in theory it could live forever so long as people in the band keep that spirit alive and intact. There have been deviations from the hawk path because of certain members over the years but the spirit somehow has survived and is still alive now. Maybe that's a fantasy and after captain Brock is gone it will end too because really, Brock IS Hawkwind. As for Nik Turner, his place in the story of the good ship is set in stone and if you listen to the first 5 years, he's very much alive still.

My view of Nik Turner is that anybody who has experienced Nik Turner live was never the same and if anything Nik left me thinking.. my God he rocked and I saw Hawkwind in 1990 and then Nik in 1994 and I felt at that point when I experienced Nik, I felt more closer to Hawkwind and with both experiences combined, seeing Hawkwind (smoking cannabis with Dave in their tour bus) and eternally grateful for that.. yet Nik made me feel better about myself and his music was definitely much heavier. I only wish I’d experienced the early Hawkwind days like around 1972-74. The Lemmy era basically. I never cared to take sides either when the Dave Brock purist spread malicious lies about Nik. Nik had nothing to do with the problem of Hawkwind not being able to tour the US. I mean really? He’s dead now, let’s see how true that is. We’re waiting. No disrespect to Dave Brock, but let’s just say Facebook can be harmful, to the point where it divided the Hawkwind fans, sad.

The saddest part was the personality chasm that existed between Nik and Dave Brock , Hawkwind suffered creatively when they parted and in similar fashion jettisoned Lemmy 70/75 often regarded as their golden period when their unique space rock really took off , the intervening line ups never quite matched this original launchpad to the cosmos.
