Artist Malcolm Peacock pays tribute to “The Great White Way,” a famous work by Pope.L in which he crawls the entire span of Broadway in New York in a Superman costume.
Self-proclaimed the “Friendliest Black Artist in America©,” Pope.L was beloved by many for his work’s satire and social critique. In the wake of his unexpected passing on December 23, 2023, Peacock discusses this video piece’s influence. “It brings up a really large question around what is heroic, who can be considered super,” he says. “I think Pope L. Is really taking up a position of saying, well, maybe I am. Maybe we are. Maybe anyone can be.”

oh damn i didn't realize Pope L died. RIP. Turning NYC into your canvas was a big thing for conceptual artists. Tehching (Sam) Hsieh spent 365 days outside. I think there's a trajectory from the creation of space in 15th century paintings through the invention of linear perspective, to 20th century abstract push-pull space of the picture plane, graffiti artists turned urban space into their canvas, while Martin Wong made the walls of NYC the subject of his paintings, Warhol turned the Empire State Building into a stable piece of visual art in his wallpaper movies, then artists like Richard Serra took the concept of "space" off the canvas, until finally you get artists like Malcolm Peacock, Hsieh, and Pope.L who make public spaces their literal medium by investigating themes of "whose space is this?" "how is space taken/occupied?" etc. which comment more broadly on colonial imperialism and the invasion of geographic territories.
