If we're talking just a guy at a drum set playing music by himself and engaging the listener - for sure. No one else really comes close. Maybe Steve Gadd. Ginger Baker had moments.

This is just fabulous. Thank you for making it...posting it. I'm 65, a classical pianist/violinist, Jazz guitarist that has been exploring drums for two weeks. I knew about Tony from when I was at Berklee in 76 and heard his album "Lifetime" with the late, great Alan Holdsworth. So now I'm going back and checking out the great drummers I've known of. Tony is up there on my list of unique, timeless, talents.

13.17 with Chick Corea does it for me every time…. That solo is so locked into the music, and totally off the charts by any standards still to this day… straight up flams over a single pedal bass for the lead in and then ‘kabam’ let it rip…. My life has never been the same since my teacher, back in the day, encouraged me to listen to Tony … blew my mind … needed therapy ever since … and the look on Stan Getz at the end, captures the moment … R.I.P Tony, you are my idol …

Tony, before he was a drummer, he was a “composer”: Each note and sound was displayed in furtherance of the composition. Tony began to evolve beyond his musical settings and found that the only musicians that could play with him were Miles and Herbie. A man in constant search of new musical challenges.

@kimmartin8977 2 жыл бұрын
This was because the floor was slippery and his HH stand/pedal kept moving away from him. In the extended video, you can say him hook the stand with his left foot and try to bring it back close to him. So, the use of the floor was not a choice.
