I rode 54-58 semi volume shift boards for the last 5 years. Sized up to a 162 regular width. Loved the extra effective edge, a long tail to land on, and most of all added stability . Floats in pow as good as a short wide.

Great to see big boards coming back finally. Not long ago it was hard to get much selection. I love length for stability at high speeds on chop and sketchy lines, speed everywhere, drift accross flats (Love cruising by skiers that are skating flats) and split for easier uphill in powder. Been riding ~40yrs, 5 10 180ish and my all mountain is always a 68 with as close to full camber as I can get these days. Currently Flight Attendant. Park days are long done for me so no worries about spinning anymore...

Great video, it seems we all went through the process of downsizing. This then got compounded with the volume shift era we've been in with people downsizing again but many of my guests downsizing from what was already a short board. Good to hear this insight and direction of embracing the design evolution of boards and how long is not something to fear anymore in fact its what a lot of us should be on.

I've heard this recently and seems to be getting traction. I never got on board w the downsize craze. Only pulled out my smaller boards for no snow days, riding w the misses and focusing on riding fake. I've sat around 157-159 directional, directional twins. Sure, nice groomers, fresh groomers and that stellar pow daze. I've even pulled out my old k2 zeppelin 161. 2 yrs ago, I tried the downsize vol shift w an orca I got for a song End of season. Ho hum. I guess I'd rather have that longer edge. I snagged some end of season boards this year, and used boards from re:supply. Went longer, and some 3d's. Looking forward to this season for the next adventure. For stability and speed, your not gonna get that on a 153 unless your a buck 10, or less IMHO. Love shows, keep coming folks!

46 years old here. It all depends on your taste, riding, and the board. I don't like big boards, but I bought a 159 Nitro Santoku because it's like a 156 (my normal size) due to the contact points distance. And for pow, I also prefer short fat boards like my Arbor Terrapin or my Split Bean.Those boards ride like a dream in deep pow. The terrapin is a nightmare in groomers though, but the split bean is amazing, and it carves in groomers amazingly well, it feels like a solid board, that thing is fkg amazing. I had 161 once, a splitboard, and I really struggled with it. It felt like a cruise ship, even in deep powder. And also for freestyle, I always liked to size down a bit. I've had tons of fun with 153 and even 151 boards. In fact, I started to hit really big jumps and learned to spin with a 151 back in the day.

The only drawbacks I found with the long boards was ragdoll's at high speed hurt more than short boards, more board to rotate during the crash and they break easier on big cliff drops if you land wrong or too flat. I purchased a 155 Capita Aeronaut last year and absolutely loved it and how snappy edge to edge, how much pop, and the speed. I never toed out on groomer days, but on pow days, I defiantly got toe drag and started going over my nose landing in powder. I think a longer (and potentially wider) board would be the solution to the powder issues I had with the the shorter and nimble 155! Now the decision of a 157 , 159, or a 158W 🤔

Regarding the fore/aft stability... I remember trying out a Fat Bob 165 (RIP AM) and landing in the front seat, with the board catching me into a stable landing. I thought I was a super hero. If you go back to the early 2000s there was a brief trend to go larger. I still have my Supermodel 168 from back then. I had to stop riding it for a few reasons. First, the slopes got way too crowded to let it run. Second, it was a bear to turn in the trees. Third, after a few seasons on it I was not able to go as much, and my legs were not in shape to handle it like it should be handled. All that said, that thing could lay an edge, haul ass, and was fun. I moved to a SupermodelX 160, which was my primary board for 10+ years. I currently ride two different 158s, but apparently need to check out that Megadeath in a 162.

Related question - how far outside of recommended boot size can you go for a one board quiver that will spend time carving as well as bombing pow? I'm 185 with a size 8 boot at 179cm and was recently looking at a Jones Flagship. Based on weight I could ride anything from a 161 to a 172 (I think a 164 would be ideal), but based on boot size I'd be limited to a 158. The problem is pervasive as the Flagship is relatively narrow compared to most freeride boards out there.

When you pick a longer board, do you tend to make any adjustments to the width or setback of your bindings to improve control of the size? I recently went up from a 154cm to 159 cm, and I'm still experimenting with this. I'm older, and no longer playing in the park as much, so the size has absolutely been fun and aided more to my more freeride style now.

There’s also the fact that I like to spin a lot, so maybe going for a bigger board isn’t the best option in this scenario ?

Just came here to say i just bought my shortest board. Its a 157w and im smack dab in the middle of the recommended wieght. Its also the softest board I've ever bought. The intent was to be playful with the family, good in tight trees and good in pow. I have a stiffer 162 pow board. So i have options. My norm is a 160 as.an all around. But now with these 2 board my next all around 0 to minimal taper board may be longer. Had a 164 once and didnt like it. But I have come to realize it not the length but not the right board for what I was doing. I'm 180lbs. What lengths do you like for tight trees? Barely glades stuff? What about for moguls? Cause damn it skiers!
@Riders_Lounge5 ай бұрын
Tight Trees is where we look at the tapered longer boards - Jones Stratos , Capita Navigator , or Korua Pencil for examples..... lots of nose but quick turning!
@UncIe_Drew5 ай бұрын
Ha! I was just talking to a capita rep at a local store. We spoke about the Navigator but it was not in the store. Also the stratos and that was out of my price range. I'm looking at sales and demo boards so I can play with a few things this year. No one has korua locally that I have seen. Anyway the capita rep helped me pick out a deck that was there... lol. It's a weston backwoods 157w. It has 18 mil of taper, pretty deep sidecut and not too set back on the inserts. Do you guys have experience with this brand at all? They are local Denver and a GP87 built board. I went with a 157w cause I thought it would be easier to throw around. They had a few 160w's and I could exchange it. I was looking for a more playful board then I generally ride. Do you think it's the wrong choice in length? At 180 lbs I'm right in the middle of the weight range for the 157w and in the lower half for 160w. I'm a 11.5 boot and actually the 157w will be the widest board I have ever had. I also picked up a demo storm wolf 162 to try this year. Knowing this would you still go to a longer backwoods or keep the 157w to be different. Sorry I need help deciding 😂

@@UncIe_Drew so the capita rep picked out a Weston? hmmmmm odd move ;) You will 100% love the storm wolf ! That's a very versatile deck actually!

@@Riders_Lounge yeah he did... lol. We looked at a lot of boards. But were only looking at boards in stock that were on sale. Because I wanted to be able to afford a couple of boards this year. So it was a pick of what was there really. So from a 157w to a 160w do you think the 157w would be on the twitchy side? Would the 160w be less maneuverable then the 157w. Or is this not much of a size difference to matter. Yes I'm excited to try the storm wolf!!! Edit: the capita guy showed me capita boards first but there was only 2 in stock and both were not what I was looking for at this time. So he helped me go through what was there. Ps.. he didn't seem to agree that mini disk could set you back farther. But he didn't come across as a freestyle guy so I'm not sure if he rode the mini disk bindings much.

Yep, 157w was sitting right with either. So I swapped it out and took home the 160w 😊

About to pick up a Rome ravine pro… I’m an advanced rider at 5’11’’, 185lbs I was gonna go with the 158, but you guys are making me consider the 162. Worried the 162 won’t be nimble enough in trees and stuff. Wondering if you have any advice or thoughts on sizing? Ps I love hard charging, this will be my pow stick, but do like to go into moguls and trees also 🤷♂️

Alright this was fun to watch. Well I missed the whole short board craze tbh. Though I feel I have always picked a board just long enough to be stable. As I also like to remain maneuverable in tight trees. For me tight trees are small trunk non pine trees think aspen and maybe i shouldn't be there bit i have fun. I know length isn't everything but i just didnt want a nose to long to swing around. I usually ride a 160 and i am 6ft tall 175-180 and boots are bigish at 11.5. That said i usually dont buy wide specific boards though look a not too skinny option. I used to ride on riser plates back in the day instead of a wide. So with length would you guys recommend getting a length that puts us in the bottom half of a recommended weight? Recently moved to a 162 and have owned 164 in the past. But I have found the 160 to be a pretty good all around. I'm asking cause i have been thinking of a shorter more playful board to mess around on. Lots of those volume shifts just seem too short tho.

Most competent riders who aren’t focused on park/freestyle could benefit from at least trying bigger boards. A couple of centimeters is nothing. Go big, like 10-20cm bigger than you normally ride. Most of my boards are in the 160-165 range but I’ve got a couple in the 170s and a 195 Doughboy Shredder. My shortest is a 151 Slush Slasher.

In need of some advice please. I’m a begginer/intermediate rider from Oz. We don’t get powder but I’m travelling to Japan. When facturing one’s weight for board selection, I assume we add (or wear when weighing) all the gear we would normally wear to our body weight? I’m 173cm (5’8) at 68kg (150lb) without gear and boot size 9.5US. What length of board is recommended for freeride/carving in Japow?

Different size situation here, using photons from 23/24 and the flex is right where I like it but I have a big problem. I have relatively large bone spurs on both my feet but my left foot is the worst, do you have any recommendations on a couple boots to look at that are in the flex zone of the photons but have a softer tongue/top of the foot section? I’m in brutal FL and there isn’t a good board shop anywhere really, I was kinda looking around and was thinking maybe something like DC transcend or Judge, Maybe Thirtytwo TM-2? I haven’t been able to try any boots other than Burton really and am looking for something that’s maybe a tiny bit wider than the photons with a softer top section for the bone spurs. After like 3 hours I have to stop because it feels like my foot is being crushed in a vice. I’ve tried having my heel strap on the looser side but that only buys me an extra run or 2. Thank you from a mountain starved FL man
