Just bought a pair of Supermatics myself given the convenience of stepping in and out while wanting to teach my kids to snowboard. Your videos were the ones convincing me of their benefit. Still have to test them out on the snow in the mountains but the setup was easy and I feel as tight in the binding as my strap bindings (yes I'm one of those "let's crank this strap one notch further types"). So far not regretting the purchase!

When learning to snowboard constantly strapping in and out going up and down a baby slope was a horrible surprise, i hadnt really given it any thought before taking it up and it was the worst part. 2 or 3 minutes to faff about just to do 10 half baked skids and fall on my arse. Then going out into the mountains and it's -15C, 3000m above sea level and blowing 80kmh winds, you really just want to get in and go, not screw about with ratchets clogged up with snow whilst all the skiers bomb off. Supermatics all the way 🎉

I will say that they have a bit of a learning curve, and for beginners who are quite unsteady on their feet, the movements you need to make to stand on one foot and balance whilst clicking the other foot in can be a little difficult if you're on anything but a completely flat slope, but yes once you get the hang of that they are for sure easier.

Another great video malcolm. I had my 1st season on the supermatics last yewasand was using my DC boots. I liked the binding but at times I found sometimes difficult to get in and out not big problems but just when the board wasn't totally flat. I have just received today the nidecker rift boots in white which look awesome and feel so comfy straight out of the box. Got my board out in my bedroom and tried them and omg the boot goes in and out so much easier than my DC boots. So although you can use any boot with them I think I will find np problems with my new boots. It's not just a marginal difference the rift just glide in and out and that's with a dry binding so it's a big difference and can't wait to hit the hill with my new set up. Also I love your 3 points at the end and couldn't agree more with all you said. We are all snowboarders at the end of the day. Keep up the good work malcolm I'm looking forward to your next video 😊

I think the Supermatics are pretty cool. I had a pair of K2 Cinches for 10 seasons because I fancied step ins and Nidecker didn't release the Supermatics yet. I ended up replacing my step ins for traditional straps but I figured out if I leave the toe strap engaged one click and leave the ankle/ladder straps behind the highback so the are out of the way I am able to step in and strap in while riding 🏂

100 days plus on mine, theres 3 issues I got with mine. First I like the ride feel (all mountain freestyle vet guy) they didn't fail me once. but I think the leaver position to get out of the binding sucks. its counter intuitive to have to push down your leaver and move out the foot the same time. Also its way to far down. Easy fix make a pull leaver which is as high as possible. second weight and footprint side to side is a problem. just make it smaller and not as heavy. 3 criticism are the straps with the plastic. It doesn't slide in as good. hope they carry over the straps and buckles from the carbon, with the flex of the normal version. oh and did I mention, they leaver to get out sucks

I feel most of the hate and kook calling is directed at Burton (and soon Union) Step Ons. Clews, probably not even worth mentioning. Generally seems there's respect for Supermatics even if a lot of people don't want to ride em. A great design; you can strap in when you need, and keep your favorite boots. Don't think they're for me, but glad they exist. When I see someone riding them, what it indicates to me is that that person gave it thought beyond the first step in/on system they came across. Sure, maybe a shop guy helped, but anyone that gives anything a slight amount of thought these days, respect.

Awesome video! Though I am still torn between the two 🙈😂. How did you find the carbons when taking it easy? I spend maybe half my time carving, but the other half is taking it easier off piste. I know the extra stiffness will be better for carving, but concerned they won't be as fun when slowing it down and wondering if the regulars will be better overall as they aren't exactly no slouch at carving anyway. Interested to know what you reccomend.
@malcolmmoore5 күн бұрын
Yeah I mean both will work, but as you say the regulars will be a little better when you slow things down, and the carbons will be better when you start carving. Both can do it all though so it depends what you want to prioritise!
@alexgould37725 күн бұрын
Thanks. I probably prioritise both equally looking back over the last couple years. However, thinking about what I want to do more of is off piste, trees and untracked snow. I generally only carve if the off piste isn't any good, which the added response to get round trees and the like will be better I guess? I am on Rome Targa's atm which sort of sit between the two on stiffness I believe. Softer will always be easier, but the added stiffness concerns me it will be a bit too twitchy and to be fun as my cruising speed is about 20mph and even carving I am only hitting 25ish mph, 30 tops.

Bravo on another honest, insightful and trustworthy product review. Curious for what scenarios do you not ride with supermatics nowadays?
@malcolmmoore5 күн бұрын
Honestly it is mostly down to laziness in changing the bindings, so I have my regular supermatics set up on my twin park board which is what I mostly use for teaching. My new board for this season is the spring break powder twin, that has the carbons on, and then I have a pair of normal two strap bindings that I will put on to another board for when I use that. Like I have a new Stranda carving board that I'll probably just put the normal two strap bindings onto when I set that up, but mostly just so they stay set on my other boards! If I was riding more park and hitting more jumps and wanted the most lightweight solution then I might not use them, but honestly I'm not riding at a level where the slight weight penalty of the supermatics creates any problems.
@rick2tube4 күн бұрын
@malcolmmoore appreciate the additional insight.. sounds like nidecker really addressed any version one issues with the 2nd generation carbons.....now they need to send you version 3 next year then you'll have enough sets to cover your quiver of boards to feature them in all your future videos! 😆

Just looking at the boots in the binding, the toes and heel do stick out (a bit more on the heel side, but not too much), but there is a bunch of spare room in the with (about a finger or a finger and a half), would that be a problem?

Nah, I have some spare width in the bonding it's fine, your feet won't move once strapped in

Hi Malcom, I sent you an email about the private lessons with no reply, I’d love to know if there’s opening for this season. Thank you love the content.

I received a set of si3 Large supermatics as a gift and am wondering if I should have gotten the size XL. I have a size 11 boot. Anyone else out there with a size 11 boot on a large binding? I also spoke to Nidecker a couple of times and got mixed responses on if I should be in a L or XL binding.
@Chaugar6 күн бұрын
Malcolm, are they lighter than the regular supermatics and if so by how much?
@Archaeoctopus6 күн бұрын
Had both bindings in hand at my local shop. A weight difference wasn't really noticeable. Didn't bring my scales but I'd assume, if there is a difference it is not that big.
@malcolmmoore6 күн бұрын
It's only 20 grams per binding, they still have to have all the release system etc which is what brings the weight. The parts that have changed to carbon were never that heavy in the first place.

Hey, why you put goggles' strap under the helmet? 🤔

well so basically lighter binding with a carbon stiffer highback, for 100 extra euros. seems like a reasonable upgrade to me
@ericolmack23506 күн бұрын
Careful to manage your expectations…they’re actually ever-so-slightly heavier than the traditional Supermatics.
@malcolmmoore5 күн бұрын
I think they're 20 grams lighter per binding than the normal ones, so not heavier, but only a marginal weight difference. Most of the weight comes from the locking mechanism which is the same on both, and the change in glass filled nylon to carbon infused nylon or whatever it is only then makes about 20 grams weight reduction

Is the carbon one lighter than the reg one ?
@alexkodr6 күн бұрын
The weight difference is marginal. I think the rational was more about stiffness, rather than weight loss.
@malcolmmoore6 күн бұрын
Yeah its minimal, about 20 grams per binding

I have the Supermatic I like them. I was having a problem with them. When I was getting in the pendulum part was moving forward and stopping me from getting in. I reached out to Nidecker and they sent me a new pair. Hope I don’t have the same problem. Anyone here having the same thing going on???

getting more people into snowboarding is not necessarily a good thing. the resorts are overcrowded as is. unless more resorts are built, getting more people into the sport will just exacerbate the problem.

Greetings from Mt Hood. 3 seasons, 200+ days, wouldn’t have anything else. I could use the carbon version, but haven’t really needed them. Perhaps next year. Thanks for the excellent review.🏂😎
