Fossil Excavators

Күн бұрын

This is the Part I of the preparation process for our triceratops skull, Skull X. Roughly 40% complete, this skull was excavated in September of 2019. A myriad of species including tyrannosaurus rex, edmontosaurus, champsosaurus and various turtles were found at the same site. This indicates that it was a river wash deposit.
The removal was featured in the Wall Street Journal's video on the commercial fossil trade. (link)

I have like 3 questions: 1 how long did you go to school to do this, 2 how does one procure a dinosaur skull, and 3 how do you know what’s bone and what’s random dirty?

I'm not him, but I can try and answer the last two questions. 1.) You can obtain a real Dinosaur skull by purchasing one. However even the replica skulls are hundreds to a few thousand dollars. 2.) Bone is harder than sedimentary rock. If you press down slightly on the bone, it won't break. If you press down on the rock, it'll break down like dust. (He has an example in a previous video.)

Question, what sort of bits do you use on your dremmel? Likewise, is there risk of damaging bone with the dremmel, or do the bits only cut through sand?

Do you work with a museum or company that preserves fossils or do you do this type of work from home?

ALSO, does the adhesive glue the tiny bit of leftover sand to the bone? How do you get rid of this afterwards?

It would have to be mechanically removed with hand tools or an air abrasive tool.
