Fossil Excavators

3 жыл бұрын

This is Part II of our Skull X restoration/preparation process. We excavated this triceratops skull in 2019, which was featured in the Wall Street Journal’s “Inside the Battle over Dinosaur Fossil Hunting.”(link below)
Preparation requires the long and meticulous process of removing sediment and securing the structure of the fossil bone.

I love watching fossil preparation but I have always wondered why you guy don't use a small canister shop vac to remove the loose sediment on the fossil? going over it with a brush to loosen the sediment and using the vac on the lowest setting would easily remove the dirt and leave the heavier bone in place. if any pieces of bone come off, you will have not lost it since it will be in the canister and easily retrieved. When I say canister vac I mean the smaller silent hobby models that aren't like the industrial ones that can suck a golf ball through a garden hose even a handheld model that is used to clean cars and is rechargeable would be good for this purpose too. I know how fragile these specimens can get and for the really fragile ones a vac would be a kin to using a sledge hammer to drive a finishing nail, but for the more robust specimens a hand vac would make the work go a lot easier. You know, work smarter, not harder?

Hi! Love your content. Question-my gf (vet Dr) has a horse skull from school days she stripped and bleached but the teeth are cracking after a few years. Type of Glue or advice to restore/protect? Thanks!!

its not bone tho?
@commanderhurst3283
@commanderhurst3283 3 жыл бұрын
No its not really. Ya see dinosaur bones have next to no organic material left after millions of years, its all been replaced by minerals. How ever its not rock either, it is different from whatever rock surrounds it. Hope ya understand this!😁

@@commanderhurst3283 I know that's what I was saying, in the video they said it was bone but its not

Oh ok I understand you. But yes in most cases I have hear paleontologists refer to it as bone perhaps for clarity. Also sorry for the misunderstanding...

It's a probably a plaster cast, used to contain the skull and make sure it stays together, even while transporting it from the dig site to the preparation site. It's about the same as a plaster cast for when you have a broken arm.

Hello thanks for watching! We use Paleobond adhesives. paleobond.com/shop/ The penetrate stabilizer would work well to recent cracking. Also ordering poly-vinyl acetate, mixing it with he appropriate amount of acetone, and pouring it on the teeth works.
