You are absolutely right. Infact I feel that percussion is not required for Vocal. Only Violin next to Tamburi is desired which was first introduced by Shri Deekshidar in a Concert in a Cutcheri in Chennai Patnam.

I was reminded of this wonderful Dwijavanti piece alapana by legend Madurai TN Seshagopalan. Just listen to his improvisations in charanam. For example, with the madhyamakala phases "Jambari sambhavithe" he goes on to sing in the drutha kalam....and what a wonderful effect! Similarly in "lambodhara guru guha" pharases also he introduces some rare sangathis. I really liked the rendition by Trichur brothers though.

The brothers are well synched and complimentary to each other. Dwijavanti raga alapanam can get sometime tricky because of Sahana resemblance. Wonder why they avoided mridangam and violin. However, their soulful rendition and good sound mixing has rectified that shortage

Without doubt this rendition by Trichur Bros. is great. But would request you to listen to the rendition of this kriti by Sivasri Skandaprasad. It is really more heart touching and more soulful. Perhaps this raga and the song are more suited to females' voice and even among them I wonder how many can get near Sivasri.
