This is an old video I decided to post despite a microphone malfunction. I compare the thin disc foam cutting pad and the MF cutting pad during a "high residue" paint correction. The foam will save you considerable amount of time in these unique situations. -L

This one video has made my life so much easier when it comes to working on vehicles with oxidized paint. Thank you for sharing this information because these red Meguiars pads make a huge difference. I just completed a 1985 Mercedes 380SL with single stage red paint and it came out great using these pads. Again, thank you Larry for doing these great videos. My red 91 Jetta coupe looked like this after sitting 6 years. I was and still am too afraid to color sand as I don't know how thick the paint still is, so I just did traditional handwork and it looks good. I can still see a haze in it when I look really close. The unknown paint depth is deterring me from screwing something up I figure. and I gotta point out the imperfections to notice them. if I was to do anything about it I'm within driving distance of nyc, lol if he would even wanna touch my rag with all the high dollar stuff he plays with all day😂.. it's got the value in memories, not dollars. I remember the day my dad bought it new.

+CUS-SPEC haha good idea, then I can stop griping!😂 Is it actually better to have an old car that's been rarely waxed? My thought is there would be more paint , but then again there's a bunch of "chalk" that you have to work thru to get to the good stuff.

That's why I normally use the green hex logic/buff and shine for cutting. They're marketed as a light cutting/heavy polishing pad, and it almost never fails me. I actually struck through some paint with the green pad, Meguiar's Ultimate Compound, and a Porter Cable 7424xp of all things. That blue Rupes foam pad is killer too.

Great video, that detail made a huge difference! With the clear coat oxidizing, wouldn't it be better to re-spray the clear coat, or is the owner committed to performing this level of detail every 6-12 months? What are the owner's long term plans, eventually the clear coat is going to burn through with this frequent level of detailing. :(

Hey Larry, What I noticed: I think on these older cars it might be better to start med cut, light pressure take out lots of water, take out all the lose material clay doesnt get out, (The material that makes your pads black) Then go in heavy in paint correction, so less chance of grinding in that embedded dirt that isn't clear coat. figured this out when clay wouldn't take out embedded contaminates on our 04 4runner which was probably washed once a or twice a year. I used a green MF (light cutting) from chemical guys, not meguiars I know, but it had a lot of pores in it. added actually a lot of water, it sprayed everywhere but it gave it the extra lube I was going for. Not too much pressure, but my pad was black every 2x2 area. I used a heavy clay bar and still, only thing that got it out was compound and a lot of water. Took all the little black specs out. 4runners are huge, so i was taking it door by door when i have the time, which model pads are those, I am going to give it a shot maybe it would be faster than my chemical guys light pad. Did you have to follow up with polish afterwards?

I'm 99% sure Larry would say the Griots Garage 6". You can use backing plates as small as 3.5" with it for 4" pads, up to a 6.5" pad with the 6" plate, and a few more sizes in between. It's a good machine, while not possessing the cutting ability of the Rupes 21, due to its 8mm throw, it will get the job done, just takes longer.Inexpensive, and has a lifetime warranty.
