It wouldn't work for smaller numbers. If I want to find out the cube root of 19000, this method suggests that it should be around 29, but it's between 26 and 27. It seems to work for the larger number because this trick comes from the fact that (x+1)^3=x^3+3x^2+3x+1 and for larger numbers, the (3x+1) term becomes insignificant, but it comes into play for the smaller numbers.
