I can not tell by your video but it looks as if you are using a too high a thread count fabric, which is guaranteed to give bad results under the best of circumstances using the hemstitcher. What I have found that works well is to use linen, which Singer mentions. If using a higher thread count fabric just pull out a couple of lines of weaving and that will also produce a line you can follow as a guide and get perfect results using only a single pass on both sides without having to do two or more passes. In either case I have never had to use tartalan to get great results unless the fabric is flimsy....just nicely starched and pressed fabric works great if your machine is adjusted correctly and does not skip stitches when the fabric is being pulled side to side...and most will if not perfectly adjusted. The thread I use for hemstitching is called invisible thread and can not be seen and is super fine and that helps keep your holes large and visible too. Another tip I would suggest is to use a size 70 needle as opposed to a size 90 when hemstitching, regardless of what the instruction manual says!

I would try heavy-duty spray potato starch and wash-away iron-on stabilizer to prepare any medium to light washable fabric. Then the threads/holes would not become distorted by pulling off the stabilizer. I would also draw lines with a washable marker such as Crayola.

What is the product you've referenced several times- 'tariden' is what it sounds like but certain it isn't correct. Is the hemstitch different from what's result from hemstitch needle or what one gets from that stitch on an embroidery machine? I have a FW & have interest in doing it as it's done with attachment but want to be educated.

I was referring to tarlatan --A thin, stiffly starched muslin in open plain weave.
