The opening statement is the problem. Thats one reason why it's not an Olympic sport and a big reason why wrestlers are dominating MMA/UFC.
@FightStylin18 күн бұрын
I'm definitely glad I dont start rolling from the knees anymore. My first school we did, but my current MMA gym we've started wrestling for the last 6 years. No one really gets hurt because we all have some competence in wrestling.

What I learned is that starting from the knees is a waste of time - someone is starting as the passer and someone is starting in open guard. That's how the roll starts. It should never be knee wrestling because that's not a realistic position for any situation.
@OverAchieverStudios6 ай бұрын
yeah I agree its a roundabout way to skip takedowns, and enter into more developed positions. Probably some merit in safety for beginners there.
@Twizzler3004 ай бұрын
It teaches hand combat, tech etc. Also keeps the hands active. BJJ is active hands and feet. Hands produce more control then feet.
@FrogGuy-tt1wqАй бұрын
positional rolling is great, but just bc starting from the knees is unrealistic doesn’t mean it’s worthless, half of sport jiujitsu is completely unrealistic anywhere else anyways, starting from the knees is js fine as long as it’s not all you do

This guy’s got charisma and he SHOULDNT be down on the mat. He needs to be out front teaching leadership to the young. We don’t need BJJ fighters in the world; we need intelligent leaders who can figure things out in the face of adversity. This guy’s got it!

I just like to start on my knees because I'm only a few weeks in, and I don't know how to fall without getting hurt. My first standing takedown was a terrifying and painful experience.
@PanFafelАй бұрын
Well damn, thats rough. I practice Aikido not BJJ, but no matter which martial art you learn, the first thing that ought to be tought is how to fall. Even in boxing, or similar - you can trip, you can be pushed, you can be punched/kicked in your jaw and black out for a second - you NEED to know how to fall - forward and backwards. It's easy enough to get a hang of in a few minutes and practicing it doesn't take a lot of time, so there isn't any excuse. If you still have problems with falling look up MAE UKEMI, USHIRO UKEMI and YOKO UKEMI. Should help, I think.

We do this one in our school. My suggestion is that best time to do this technique is when your opponent commences to move forward and their weight/CG is rising from the mat. Quick effective technique.

My gym won’t allow anyone too start on there knees. My coach says it’s one of the best ways to injure yourself. We can stand up and wrestle or pull guard. If we end up on our knees mid roll than that’s fine but we’re never allowed too start from there.
@nicksmith4808Ай бұрын
I don’t really ever start on the knees anymore. I either start standing with them if we have space and if we don’t then I’ll start in guard and let them stand.
