Tricks, Tips, and Secret to Gardening in Extreme Heat

I live in the high deserts of NM. I have also noticed about a 10-15 degree drop in the temperature around the vegetables. Typically I grow garlic, cowpeas, corn, etc, but not in a particular order. I may experiment more with your idea. Last year our corn was in front of the potatoes in the same bed. The potatoes thrived with the corn in front. The corn was facing SW blocking direct intense light from the other crop. It was a “Hugh” moment because I had to find an area to put some left over seed potato, so not something I thought about at the time. The potatoes in the corn bed did better than the potatoes in the grow bags.

So glad I'm not the only one to notice the lower temperatures. Funny how we just stumble on stuff, isn't it? :D Let me know if you do experiment with my idea and what you think.

I can’t imagine how plants survive the heat TX has had this summer without shade cloth. We have had extreme drought in WI and I use shade cloth. We just had 1-1/2” of rain last week and under grass mulch it was dry as grass creates quite a mat. So keep in mind when watering by hand that the water doesn’t easily make it through mulch. I since put down drip irrigation and wish I had done it a long time ago.

Good luck to you! I began my first TX garden in a ground floor edge of an apartment fenceline..Try to keep your tomato watered, feed it every 2 weeks once it starts blooming!! You are on your way!! And.... no matter the outcome... never give up on trying. Gardeners take time to grow.... just like plants. There is definitely a learning curve!!

@@Katydidit this is my first time but honestly it can be painful digging and lifting due to my Mass Tumor my appendix exploded I am disabled but I refuse to give up on me. It helps my depression and anxiety like fr and I am learning to be calmer and not so agitated on frustrated you know because you're in pain I'm learning how to use my pain for a good purpose if that makes sense the garden is really blossom like I just planted some stuff a few days ago and it's 2 days and it's already like poking his head up out the ground so I'm very excited about this Garden thank you and I appreciate the encouragement I needed it and advice cuz it's some questions I have as well about my watermelon plant like the leaf snapped over when I got home like I don't know if a bird snapped it or if my cats did it I don't really know but I don't know what to do about it as well as my one of my peas is leaning over so I didn't have it fixed up on a bamboo stick but it just went past the bamboo stick and laying over so I don't know if something did it as well but I do have two plants that's cleaning over and but they're in cups like one is in a container and one is in like a foil circular pen foil pan a circular foil fan. But definitely excited about growing to help families. I'm proud of you your garden is very beautiful 🌹 And the temperature has been up to 110-115 so had to increase watering any suggestions about the weather or Are the plants ok?? I keep them on the porch but the sweet potato is in a five gallon large container but half full of soil it's doing good but when do you suggest adding more soil to the sweet potatoes it's been a week and three days estimating.

@@Katydidit I started my garden on mother's day 🙏🏾 because I went through a loss I had a miscarriage this year in 2022 and this has really helped my depression and anxiety. My husband told me that he loves the idea and the plants are pretty so having someone support your thoughts before you begin made a big difference. He lives two hours away in Tyler Texas so the garden helps me stay focused and prayerful at all times. I thank you for your encouragement I am new to this.

Your tall short strategy is doing two things: 1) creating shade, which keeps the ground cool, and 2) blocking air flow, which let's the cool ground affect the air higher up off the ground.

I believe the scientific reason for your lower temperatures in those "areas" is due to increase oxygen levels put out by the taller rows. For example, I knew someone who lived in a small apartment, where there was only gravel around the building and up to the front door slab. She took potted plants (lots of them) which included 2 fig trees and placed them packed together, all around the door slab area. After parking my car on the gravel area and walking to the door, you could feel an instant change in temperature. When I'd step out to leave, it would be an instant wave of heat hitting me as I left the planted front door area. It was quite amazing. There had to have been at least a 10 degree difference, if not more.

My pots and stone garden plants are under a huge tree, that sheds lots of organic material most of the year (leaves, twigs, etc) .....so silly me was pulling off the old, decaying material from my pots and garden! The tree was doing the mulching and I NOW understand. Gonna leave all that decaying leaves and stuff alone...

smart thinking. Another benefit I've found to Asian varieties is that the insects aren't quite sure about them yet. If the insects have a choice between a neighbor's black beauty eggplant and my Asian eggplants, they'll go back to their known lunch and leave mine alone.

Do you put your mulch on top of the soil and then plant the seeds? I'm new to your channel. I planted my seeds in May...mustard seeds, carrots, cantaloupe, green beans, and tomatoes. and cucumbers. All I got was mustard greens, and a few cucumbers. I watered regularly. I'm in Mesquite, right outside of Dallas. The sun BURNED everything!!! What say you?

I would put composted mulch down a week or 2 after the seedlings have sprouted up ... or any time after transplanting. Right now you can put in tomato transplants, start zucchini, beans and cow peas, Swiss chard, arugula, & Malabar spinach, and basil from seed. Keep things well watered until established, our Texas sun and heat is brutal! Good luck!

Long yard beans are oriental plants and it could handle Texas weather. Plant okra also? Okra loves sunshine and loves water! So make sure to mulch okra to save water.
