What is that blue-green color on the bolts of the hub? Is it a green threadlocker? On my bolts was same color, not sure what it was. If that brake drum is very rusty, is it possible to clean it, or you need to buy a new one? Thank you for the film.
@mdemers7672 жыл бұрын
more likely it is anti-seize coating.
@dalemihocik47324 жыл бұрын
The most likely cause of a drum being ''stuck '' on is a grove worn into the drum by the brake shoe . Just back off the star adjuster on the back side and save yourself some time . If the center of the drum is rusted to the axle strike it with a hammer .
@colubrinedeucecreative2 жыл бұрын
Part of the issue is that the adjuster is not accessible, because the axle bolts to the hub from below. Now that I think about it maybe I could just take off the whole hub.

I have a 96 Toyota Camry with this same problem. It has the 2 built holes and my hub is so bad the threads ripped out. Plus the backing plate overlaps the outside of the hub so you have to bend it to get the screwdrivers in. What a pain. Hub still isnt off yet. Daily driver time constraints

Can you slightly drop the drum on the ground with the jack that would jar it loose not overdo it but it should loosen it enough so you can pull it off I've seen this done

I just removed both my rear brake drums for the first time ever! My secret. I used my $200 rubber sledge hammer from "Mac's Hardware." It is a 12 lb. Deadblow hammer that is 36" long. The drum had rust welded itself to the shaft that centers your wheel on the hub. 5 good whacks all over and it came right off!

I'll tell ya what, I got a 98 Honda CRV rust bucket here in Iowa and my brake drum is as stuck if not more. I'm beginning to think fire is the only answer, just burn the whole fuckin car, god dammit, I hate rust.

If you are hitting it on the innermost area where the hub is directly behind, you are safe to hit it very hard and you won't break anything.

@@p.delatorre2386 the drum may shatter if you go smashing it on the outside.

Un bolt the brake cylinder from the back plate and push it in. the shoes will fall away from the drum that way and you can get them out of that worn in groove.

When I have had to free up stuck drums, I get the back axle and tires off of the ground, on jack stands. I pull the tire I'm working on and then get into vehicle and put it in drive. Get the rear wheels spinning and then step on the brake. The drum comes loose from everything. It's a little hazardous I know, but it saves a lot of time and labor. Very effortless and effective. If not on the first try, usually second or third attempt and it's off. :)

The mixture of penetrant that beats Kroil, 50/50 ATF and Acetone. I used it on my WI truck cab and bed mounts, they came off without breaking. You can rent a tool from an auto parts store, then if it breaks it's under warranty and returnable. Damn original drums! No Shit.

You shouldn't do this and you shouldn't do that but I do it anyway and you can do it anyway so why did I say you shouldn't do this and you shouldn't do that? Cuz I don't have much of a clue? What he's prying on is the backing plate - which is relatively thin plate. Yeah it's bowed out. A puller is the best route. And it doesn't have to be an expensive one. If the drum was heated where it contacts the hub (actually the end of the axle) with an acetlyene torch (carefully and before anything flammable was applied) it would probably have popped off very quickly. There are some good videos on brake drum removal on KZbin - this isn't one of them. Toyota's threaded holes work very well if they aren't rusted to the point the threads are gone. "Who the hell knows man?". Not this dude. "The hammer is actually doing microscopic things to the rust." Jesus.

Raven Feather , your not the god of automotive, you bust his balls for this and that and I know for a fact a couple of your statements are bogus. Shows your inexperience. I was raised up around automobiles in a time cars were call muscle. We had a garage and an auto salvage. Before I was 15 I was cutting off quarter panels. I removed more drums before I could legally drive than most remove in a lifetime. Heating with a torch works for the stubborn 99%, but that 1% you've never met, your comment declares it so. It's sad the world is full of know-it-alls and still screwed up. You should get a position counselling world leaders to fix bigger problems than brake drums.

I use a 1 LB or heavier hammer to remove hub. Take the hammer an smack it on the outer most face of drum. Than rotate drum 1/4 turn, than smack it again. Continue doing so, till drum pops loose. I find this trick works very well for me. It usually takes me 2 minutes, or less, to do so.
@syyenergy77 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know and that usually works. These drums were one of the worst ones I ever had to take off. It was ridiculous. I was using a 3 pound hammer and even the air chisel with blunt rod and pry-bars. These drums were ridiculous and not normal.
@ravenfeather70877 жыл бұрын
And be prepared to buy a new drum because you cracked the one you have. Better yet take a 10 lb splitting maul and really smack that sucker on the outer edge. Don't forget to smack the lugs/studs a couple of times so you destroy the threads. Two minutes your kaputski.
