I have watched several videos about your orchids and repotting, and want to admit roots of your plants. Root system is amazing. 👏👍

Enjoy watching and learnt a few things- tightening at the bottom and adding oyster grit for calcium. I always not sure what calcium fertiliser to use and cal mag is so expensive. Let’s see when it blooms.

In my experience, many of the Laeliinae do better when I let them grow out of the pot. Be that as it may, when repotting I find it easier to just sacrifice the pot, given the plant is much more valuable then a terra cotta pot. After soaking, I would put the pot on its side, then strike the corner of the bottom with a hammer, the force being parallel to the bottom. That usually takes off the bottom as one piece. Then set the pot (that remains) with the plant upright, and use the hammer again to make a parallel force on the top edge heading downwards. That often cleanly cracks the pot all the way down to the (now naked) bottom. I alway did this and was able to usually avoid damaging the roots too much.

That was a good job. I’d make way more mess. I have used reptibark for most of my repotting. It won’t last as long as orchiata but I guess you know that. Your plant looks really great in that bowl! Looking forward to a bloom video!

I used to always use reptile bark. You can recognise it in my earlier orchid repotting videos. It has come to this again!

Gardening at Douentza I do have one or two cattleyas that I grow in small pebbles and they seem to do well in it. They grow and bloom. It would be similar size pebbles to the ones Rick L used. I used it to try and keep the plants stable in the pot and to prevent pots tipping over at the slightest touch. Works great for that.

Wow. I love your beautiful cattleya. The roots are so healthy. The roots outside of my pot are always drying out. How do you keep them so healthy?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 жыл бұрын
It can be a problem to keep overhanging roots hydrated. A humid environment helps and always water the external roots when watering the plant. Hope this helps. By the way, overhanging roots can be an indication that it's time to repot.

You have a steady hand, thankfully! I was watching out for those dangling roots the whole time. Please, could you tell me the bleach concentration in your solution? The product available here has about 3% sodium hypochlorite, I am wondering how much to use per litre? Thank you for sharing!

Question: Why didn't you make more holes in the pot so that it would have made it easier to thread the wire instead of digging in the media that you just put the orchid into? I usually put holes into the pot so that there is more ventilation and makes the roots have places to venture out of. Other wise good video and good tricks and tips. Waiting patiently for the bloom to bloom.

Could have heated an Ice Pick over a flame & added holes under the rim for anchoring.

This is the kind of plastic that shatters easily but the heated ice pick is a good idea. Whatever an ice pick is 😂

Oh wow that was a serious mission lol. I love the use of the wire to hold it in place. Hopefully the bleach has killed all the little critters and the orchid will thrive for you now 😊.

Hi Rachel, what a job you did on that Cat. Awesome. I was wondering if you ever use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide or 70% Isopropyl Alcohol for pest treatment? I normally use the HP when I re-pot new orchids and if I see Scale or Mealybugs, I use the alcohol. Both have worked very well for me. Plus the HP kills SNAILS. Thanks for sharing!
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Wanda. Yes, I have used both isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in the past but I find bleach easier to get and cheaper.

I live in Florida which is very hot all year round and I found that clay pots dry too fast. I am thinking to get plastic pot with enough ventilation to repot my cathleyas and other orchids that I have. Do you think is a good idea? What would you recommend? Thank you! Great video

"this is just drowned in bleach, there's a terrible smell in this room" hmm, I love the smell of bleach. And lemon furniture polish. But Pine-Sol and Lysol, those I can live without. Great job on the repot. Untangling the mass of roots always takes far longer than I would like.
