No recognition manual for random merchant ships
Attempt to abide by the historical orders in regards to the London Naval Treaty, Operating Procedures and Restrictions

In the time of your absence, My career in SH3 has gone off the rails, including botching an attack on the Hood and then having a multiple patrol long kill-less streak, from bad wether to too many escorts, to encounter nothing at all, U-48 couldn’t catch a break. Until about 5 patrols of nothing We went up to near the Orkney Islands in the strait between them and the Shetland islands my watch officer spotted an aircraft, I saw that it was a swordfish and decided to that it would be funny if I tried to find the carrier, after altering our course we got a lone warship sound contact, we slowly approached and I couldn’t believe my luck, we had encounter the HMS Illustrious. By herself, no destroyers, and we were in range. We quickly made an attack run, and two volleys and three hits later, she was on her way to the bottom, I had never been prouder of my self in a video game.

Once you are escorted by an enemy you are fair game! Neutrals run escorts as well.

You made the right call in this situation to engage the lonely small merchant first even though it is greek(i am a greek dude).Hope you will manage to regain contact with the small convoy especially now that it is dark and you can escape the escort easier after a surface attack on them.

I'm curious how much you make use of time compression. Once you make contact with potential targets do stop using time compression? How long are your gaming sessions?

I´m literally too scared of the game crashing if I use TC too much during engagements. Most are real time, or up to X2, sometimes X4 TC while I´m trying to get into position

Great episode! Night time explosions were great as well. I was getting nervous when you had said the depth was only 88 meters, and then you didn't state the depth for a long time after that , so I was really wondering how much risk you were willing to take.

QUESTION: What is the story with Torpedoes these days? Earlier you had detailed instructions from Naval Command about 'contact' fuses only and raising your depth settings for torpedo runs. However in recent patrols, you are still sticking with 'contact' fuses only, but are no longer setting the depth 2-3m higher than what you desire. Have the torpedoes been improved? Can you also switch back and install 'magnetic' fuses? In short, what are the instructions from Naval Command at this point in the war? If there is a sheet from Naval Command, maybe you could pull it down and read out what has been learned and is happening with ordinance in the U-boot fleet now that it is: January 1941!

The instructions have not changed. Impact only. Fast speed forbidden. Set depth to 3m above the targets draft. At least 3m deep (2m in good weather).

It did look like a corvette not a destroyer. You are at least as fast and you are a narrow target. You've sunk a corvette with gunfire before. Just saying.

Why would he want to risk damaging his boat then needing to return to base for repairs cutting his patrol short, anyways next episode should see him catch up to that small group of ships and at least sink the larger rear one. How SH3 works if you get out of a certain range and then come back to the ships they could be spawned in as different ships then what he saw before due to the random ship spawning feature in SH3.

Honestly I couldn´t tell what kind of escort was facing me. If that turned out to be a destroyer or a fast corvette then I could have gotten myself into a lot of trouble
