Tricot have been going about 10 years now - started a little more Pop punk, but developed into the most noticeable band in Japan’s large Math Rock scene (I think you have checked out Sokinanaru who are math with their originals, but less so with their covers). Earlier - back into the 90s Math often crossed over with the Noise scene - see Ruins and the grandfather of Japanese Math/alternative rock - Tatsuya Yoshida.

Ahh yes, Math rock. You might swing down to Taiwan for Elephant Gym. Not exactly intentionally making weird sounds just for making weird sounds, but ya gotta love the bass player. There are other version of Finger floating around YT, but I always seem to come back to this older one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZLGlKtrmbmggbc I've told my wife, next trip back to Taiwan has to be scheduled with seeing them live.

YAAAAH Tricot, my favorite band. The band is known for using a lot of odd time signatures, like a lot. and time changes everywhere. What makes them good is that they actually have good catchy melodies on top of the weirdest time signatures lol

I think there's some overlap between Band-Maid and Tricot fans, and I'm one of them. Band-Maid hits me in all my rock feels and Tricot checks all the experimental alty boxes. I dislike the term "math rock" but accept it. For the longest time I kept bands who were branded as "math rock" at arms length because I hate math. 🙂

Yes! Wave on board with both Tricot and Sokoninaru. Just need to throw in some 88Kasyo Junrei. More transitions and time signatures than you can count coming your way. And the Wave-smile was noted.

tricot always has amazing drummers, the original drummer Komaki (long hair) was awesome and the new guy Yoshida (short hair) is also incredible. In between the two, they brought in Miyoko Yamaguchi (also amazing) to fill in on some tours they had scheduled when Komaki left. She used to drum for Detroit7 and is now the drummer for BimBamBoom. Miyoko is my second favorite Japanese drummer behind Akane. If you check out BimBamBoom Jam 2/5 sessions you'll get to see her drum skills in action.

“Tricot (pronounced the-ko/tree-ko) comes from the French verb tricoter, meaning to knit. Tricot fabric has a unique zigzag weave that is textured on one side and smooth on the other. This allows the fabric to be soft and also very sturdy for activewear.” This duality makes Tricot an appropriate name for this band.
@excessivegrot2643
@excessivegrot2643 3 жыл бұрын
とりこ, or toriko, means captive or prisoner in Japanese and is the source of the name. I’m not sure how intentional the french knitting connection is, whether a deliberate pun or not

Part of my brain enjoys solving puzzles and listening to music with unusual time signatures. If you want to hear something REALLY complicated listen to Tricot's song "Wabi-Sabi". I found a few othe bands that manage to combine complex rhythms and memorable melodies: JYOCHO, Cö shu nie, Haisuinonasa, Paranoid Void.

Wow, just found this, why did I miss this reaction of yours Wave Potter?! .... Japanese math rock, yes! Been a long time fan of this scene and Tricot too and not a particularly popular "reaction-genre". All the bands mentioned by others in the comment but also we cannot talk about this scene without checking out the band Toe. You as a drummer would particularly appreciate it.

They start with the 6/8, then switch to 3/4, as you note - but then use a two bar ritardando dropping the tempo *lots* - then come back with the original tempo, but as a nearly-punk 2/4 for the chorus :-) I think it is a brilliant way to manage the potentially jarring shift.

Cool that you got to Tricot. One of the best math-rock/post-rock bands in Japan. Kudos to @unattributed for the suggestion. I actually suggested another Tricot song a long time ago--kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpClkHqXodh9qKc You should check it out. For a long time they were all female, though the current drummer is a dude. There is one commenter who has made it a mission to count all the time changes in their songs--it's really hard.

Any reaction channel that discovers my favourite band gets a "Like & Subscribe"! The 3 ladies in Tricot (tree-co) have been playing together for over 10 years and I think it shows in how tight they are live. Add in an exceptional drummer 5 years ago and the whole is more than the sum of its parts! They are playing the UK this coming spring, so I'm hoping to see them live if Covid doesn't intervene.

Can you react to an artist that you’ve never heard of, Ez (Easy) Mil and his song Superly Real? I would like to hear your take on his music. He composed the song, mixed the track, played all the instruments including drum and guitars, sang lead and back up vocals. He’s a 23 y/o independent artist, but he put this together when he was 20-21 y/o.

Somehow, the word that creeps into my head, as I hear their song, is "dissonance". I have zero idea what I'm talking about, but somehow, that's the word in my head. To anyone able to resolve this for me, or at least tell me I'm an idiot, it'll be much appreciated and I will be much obliged.

😂🤣 That got me good! I mean dissonance could apply to a lot of things technically. I’d say they are definitely playing some dissonant notes in this song, like when I talked about playing whatever they want. But also dissonance created by the changing time signatures. So I’d say you were right on man!
