•Loved the spinnig bobbin between your fingers bit...makes perfect sense to do that. •Suggest when you tie the mono onto the hook, you either flatten out the end with pliers so it can't slip back through your windings or touch a flame to it and then flatten it out if you can't just squeeze it. That way there's an edge for the thread to pull against instead of reaching critical pressure and just sliding out from under the thread. •instead of a pen case to push the fibers back, a short piece of a straw (~1/4" or so) works great, either plastic straw or paper. Cut off as much as you need and then snip it from front to back with your scissors so you can slide your thread through it. Also, once you push it back, that strip of plastic straw will hold it in place without the need to constantly massage it. If you have trouble with fibers of any type crowding the eye where you need to either whip-finish or hit it with head cement, that piece of straw will very nicely hold them out of the way so the wrong pieces don't get accidentally trapped or glued down . Don't recall you saying exactly what you were fishing for with that. Although just about anything in the salt will eat squid, was it tied for Stripers, Blues, Jacks, ?? Nice Tie!

In New Zealand King Fish love these flies. Expect we add some green along with the the pink, gives it a more realistic look in the water. Nice fly.

Ive tied a few variations on simple white feather flies for rock cod. Theyve sort of morphed into shrimp flies some of which use maribou (uv coral color) which I can't wait to try. I never watched a squid tied but Im going to give this a try as Im finding I can usually produce a fly thats more durable, better suited to what I want from it - (stouter hook, more movement, better color combos, uv) anyway thank you for the tutorial Im at a point now where I want a 2nd bobbin so I can load different color threads beforehand then tie a half a dozen in assembly line fashion. 1 of the best parts of this is 1 - its a perfect rainy winter day hobby & 2 - I save a lot! P line cone heads are maybe 5-6$ each & the rigging/hdwr is always junk not to mention how they gouge you on shipping, for the same money I can tie half a dozen of something better. Fun stuff thx!

A new technique of tying on mono that was well explained - now where do you get those feathers? Doesn't look too tough to tie but really time-consuming - just the thing for these days of isolation.

I like the idea of a squid, but would make a few modifications. When you tie on the 2nd batch of hair to create the body why did you use a seperate bundle? Wouldn't it have been simpler and time saving to simply use the 1st bundle to accomplish the same result. In other words, I'd tie on the 1st bundle of hair only using the longest hairs from the tail. Then, tie the hair on in the middle of that bundle. By tying on the hair in the middle you'll have sufficient hair protruding forward to create the same effect produced by the 2nd bundle. The only difference is that you only have to tie on once and not twice. You can still peel back the forward section with your pen tube just as you did in the video, but it will be a stronger attach point because the forward hair will be an extension of the 1st bundle. Make sense? That's how I'd do it if I was still living on the SE coast of Florida or the keys. Lastly, that piece of 100 lb mono you used in the 1st step could be replaced with anything handy that happened to be laying around. A tiny diameter copper wire would do the same thing and it should produce the same desired wiggle action in the tentacles. In fact, you could eliminate the mono altogether if you used a dropper hook to tie onto at the rear. Hinging that dropper in the rear of the fly to the front hook could also be an improvement providing a great hinged wiggle action. This would make the pattern less difficult to tie. Sorry if anyone has interpreted my observations as being critical. I just enjoy fly tying and I'm always looking for a better pattern or a better way to tie existing patterns, especially when the pattern is this complex. I love your little squid and I'll give it a try when I visit my old saltwater fishing grounds. Keep up the good work. My compliments on your squid.

Looks like it will work great for strippers. Do you put any kind of a tube over the buck tail after you soak it in hot water to help it take a set? I have used tap water to wet small bucktail streamers and slid a plastic straw over it and let dry to take a set. Does hot water work better than just cool tap water?

I don't Karl. Soak it in hot water then set it with cold water and hang it upside down to dry overnight.

One of your earliest comments on the nice squid pattern that you tie in this video is "really realistic in the water." Might it not have been appropriate to SHOW us how this fly actually performs? Even using a bathtub or fish tank would have been okay.
