The drag on the outside is to adjust it on the fly with out removing your hands from rod or reel. Simply adjust it with your pinky or forefinger. ... the spool is shaped like that ensure the line is evenly distributed as you retrieve your line. 😊

I bought this reel in a 4/5 from trident that was used. As always the service was great and worked out to be much cheaper than what I could buy one for in the UK, even with shipping and tax. I have had Hardys, Redingrons and many other reels but I have to say that the Ross is a work of art. I’m an engineer and love the machining of the reel, it’s beautiful. I think Ben has over thought the drag here, I’ve got to say it’s a simple and neat solution that’s different to a normal protruding knob, but is simple to use. But don’t get bogged down with the details let’s face it doesn’t really get used in 99% of situations, it’s just a wonderful pierce of craftsmanship.

Great review the spool is meant to lay line without it overlapping and catching when retrieving fast - I have the 3/4 4/5 and 5/6 in silver they are great but spare spools are expensive

I have one in a 4/5 and love it. The drag is a bit strong for trout, but what drag isn't? Unless you are using a click and pawl, I picked it up when it was first released, and I think they were around $450 at the time. I haven't bought a reel since the original Evolution. Since picking up the R, I also picked up an Abel Vaya for my 5wt rod
