Just bought one of these for a rod that can do double duty for Colorado pike and light flats work. Can't wait! Ross is a perfect blend of no frills, high quality machining for a fair price.

Yes, Ross is built to last. I have some old Ross reels that must be 15 years old or more.

Nice review. I have one of the original Ross evolution reels 15-16 yrs old has been used hard and still works flawlessly. I also recently got the Ross evolution LTX for my 6 wt. First day on it the drag got put to a serious work out on some large bows. Love it.

I too have one of the old ones with the circle cutouts. Back then it like "wow, they drilled holes in it to lighten things up". Crazy how much more they cutout now than they used to. Mine has been great as well. The only problem I've ever had with Ross was some old Big Game reels in saltwater.

I just bought the Ross LTX 7/8 and tested its maximum drag at 2.5 lb. Ross claims the drag of the LTX is 4 times greater than any of its predecessors. Well now, I own the original LT size 4 and on the same scales that reel has a max drag of 1.75lb. Simple maths: 1.75 multiplied by 4 is 7 lb of drag. So either this is a false claim by Ross or this is a product fail. I'm returning the reel to the retailer.

Gorgeous quality reel, but I prefer its lesser expensive sibling, the Animas, to this one.

@@tdog9150 lifetime warranty, machined (durable), and great Ross customer service. The Animas uses a drag engagement system that, according to Ross. has fewer than 10 failures in over 50,000 Ross reels out there using it. Nope, it’s not sealed, but in my opinion more important than if a drag is sealed or not is that the drag is reliable and works. The drag is used on reels from 4 weight to 12 weight. Reliability is huge for me, and Ross makes super reliable reels.

What rod would you recommend pairing this reel with?

For general trout fishing, Sage X top end fast action, Winston PURE if you want a more flexible and relaxed style. Mid range, either a Loomis IMX Pro or a Sage PULSE. 5 weight for most situations. Hope this helps!
