The tutorial from WranglerStar that I used
• Ultimate Workbench Bui...
So I tried to build a workbench from the Wranglerstar channel, I sort of succeeded. DIY is a funny thing, it often is way more of a pain and can be much more expensive than just buying something that's already done, but that just isn't as much fun is it. Keep it weird y'all #shadetreearmy

We did this too but our problem was the drilling of all the holes made it wonky and now one corner is an entire inch above the opposite side! Not sure how to fix it because it’s glued!

lol. Dude the bench looks great! I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Having that solid work top is 90% what makes that bench a good bench. I had similar issues a workbench I built a a few videos back and I just used a beltsander with some 40 grit to level the everything. Just use a straight edge and some winding sticks to make it flat. Also any time you need to drill and large hole over an existing hole drill a hole first in a scrap board then clamp that board as a guide over the work piece. That should make your countersink much cleaner. Good video. Subscribed

because the wood you get at home depot has rounded edges, you would have gotten a better top if you had taken 1/8 inch off one side on a table saw. Good enough for a moto workshop table.

Curved edges are fine... it just takes more shellac in that spot and then the sander smooths it over, the issue is the few thin coats and that it needs a few more to be flat.

As a somewhat decent hobbyist woodworker, I absolutely love watching you do wood projects! I'm sure if I video'ed myself stumbling around in the dark whenever I try to wrench on my bike, you'd get a real kick out of it!! Couple tips: when you glue up boards, wait about 20 minutes and then wipe off the excess glue with a damp rag. If you need to countersink holes like that after drilling the through hole, put another sacrificial piece of wood over top of it - the top board will prevent the good piece from tearing out. Also, you could glue an extra 2x4 to the very outside without any holes drilled, to cover up the bolts.

Shadetree, I love it! You will be needing lots of cabinet space in your shop. Here is an idea I used in my garage. Buy two floor cabinets, either drawer type or door type. Four 2x4's and a 4'x8' 1'" thick piece of plywood. Put the two cabinets 8' apart where you want another work bench. Get them settled where they are nice and not wobbly, put the 4 2x4's across the top of them to provide a surface for the 4'x8' 1" thick plywood. and secure them tightly to the cabinets with brackets or screws, however you think best, Lay ythe 4'x8' 1" plywood across the 2x4's and screw the plywood to the 2x4's. You can recess the screws and later cover with plugs of round dowell and sand smooth if you want a finished look. If a 4' deep work bench is too much, you can cut it off to your desired depth with a skill saw. Wala, finished work bench. Now for the best part, if you like tools on a peg board, before setting the cabinets, screw some 2x4's to the wall 8' apart and another in the middle. Slide the cabinets back to he 2x4's on the wall and use the 2x4's as extra securing points. Now when you put the top on the cabinets, you can put a 4'x8' piece of peg board up behind and above the work bench and put tools every where you want. Oh, yeeha!

When I made my workbench, I got some 3" 'C' channel and welded it together in a frame and then covered it in two layers of 3/4" plywood. You can hammer all day on that thing and it won't break. Maybe check the local steel recycler to see if they have something you could buy.

Watching this sitting at the computer desk I made myself like twenty years ago. It doesn't look like much, but it fits me ergonomically and it holds everything I need it to. I can definitely relate. Plus you're not only building an appliance, you're also building up your skills, unlike finished products consumers do. Next time you'll do something vaguely similar, you'll do it much more easily and much more efficiently. And you'll reuse the tools you bought for this project. Kudos to you. And as always, thanks for your refreshing honesty.

Hey Josh, I'm just watching your video on building your workbench. And I'm super impressed by all the hard work you put into it! It may not be as pretty as you wanted it to be but it's going to get the crap beat out of it over time. So I just wanted to compliment you on your persistence and desire to make it as good as you could. I'm 66 and have done a ton of DIY projects in my life, and I have been disappointed a ton on how they came out. But I learned something every time I did one. So good on you, Bud, for gettin' it done! And as you said, every time you do something on it, you'll know that you built that, and on your first try, it came out pretty good! And by the way, that top that you built will be indestructible. I'm not sure about the store bought legs though. But that top will bear the weight of any iron short block Chevy engine you throw on it. So I say good effort! And good result! And as Adam Sandoval says, stay stubborn! And dream until your dreams come true👍

Tip for next time. Wood glue is water soluble when it's wet. So wipe up the extra glue with a wet shop rag before it dries. Saves you from having to chip off all the chunks when it's dry. Then you can go straight to planing with a lot more success.

Haha I did the same thing about two years ago when I first heard about them! They work great to make nice holes with no tear out. But they can be pricy.

Also, for the record, I built a 3-tap kegerator for my kitchen a few years ago. The wooden collar that the taps mount to is uneven, the regulators are kind of floating around inside and it cost me WAY more than it would to buy one with the same functionality, but dammit, I BUILT THAT!!! And honestly, when anyone sees it for the first time, they all get that same wide-eyed look of wonder on their faces when they see the triple skull-themed tap handles and it never ceases to put a smile on my face. This is my kegerator! There are many like it, but this one is mine!

Instead of looking at how inexperienced a job you did, look at what you can improve on in future projects, never consider anything a failure, the experience and the improvements you do on the next job are priceless!!!

In a world of modern instant gratification, it's a lot more common to hear "I paid for this" and "I bought that" than "I made that" and "I built this." For some, the gratification comes from how invested we are - emotionally, financially, and through our labor. It's not my place to say one is better than the other, but I certainly appreciate craftsmanship when I see it, and I think you demonstrated the kind of craftsmanship, bravery and stubbornness that you can justifiably take pride in.

The problem with using framing lumber is that its normally dried and treated to help prevent rot and bug damage.

My workbench is my baby changing table from when I was a baby. It has a flat top that use for work, has 3 sided raised edges to keep tools from falling off the sides and back, and has drawers that would be used for clothes and diapers, but I use for tools and hardware. It cost me nothing and my mom loves that I still use it all these years later!

Lowes has a nice workbench that you can pickup for around 150 on sale. They also have a workbench with a drawer and large cabinets under the work bench that you can get around 2 bills. That's what I put in my garage.

I built my own with a plywood top that works well...As heavy duty as anything. The plus for making your own is that it can be made to fit you. Mine is 41" high and 3' deep. It also should be able to handle half a ton.

Paste wax buffed out on top of shellac will bring out the sheen. A couple coats of paste wax will really bring it out. If too much use #0000 steel wool to knock down the sheen.

When I built mine I used an old solid core wooden door for the top. It can take a beating and it was free because we were replacing the door anyway.

I think you did OK👍🏻. A buddy I ride with has one of the new Triumph Rockets, 2500cc by feck it can go, I have a BMW K1300S and it struggled to keep up with the Rocket in a straight line. Great thing you are doing. ❤ the channel. Stay safe🤘.

Use a dowel in the hole to center your bit and use a forstner bit instead of a spade bit for your countersink hole. It makes a neater hole. I thought you were a nutcase the first time I saw one of your videos but you always entertain and always have interesting topics. Keep it up and stay safe

I was definitely thinking it looked a little narrow... It's definitely a great first go, as someone who does a lot of woodworking I have never gotten a better finish than with a true boiled linseed oil (in my opinion). But for a shop table exposed to oil, a water-based poly is probably the way to go for anyone trying to make this.
