Just a suggestion? I carry one of those 'Everstart' power bricks in my Road King's saddle bag just for emergencies. I have a 'pig-tail' connected to the battery that my float charger/batt maintainer plugs in to. As luck would have it, the power brick's accessory kit has the same 'mating' pig-tail connector. So, I'm never left high and dry if my battery decides to crap out!

Most of the time people negative clamp somewhere else other than the battery is to help isolate the electrical syatem of the vehicle being jumped. If the jumped vehicle has an electrical issue it helps to not backfeed through the jumper cables and not burn out electrical components. Like the computer on the Harley for instance.
