Hi Lisa, thank you for this video. I've had my pressure cooker (not specifically Instant Pot) for a year & I've used it maybe two times. After watching your video, today (01-17-2020) I called the manufacturer to get replacement seals for the lid. They said my model pressure cooker is being discontinued. I bought two replacement seals. I'm so glad you included that tip. I forgot to order a liner. I'll do that now. Thank you for all of your tips.

My IP Duo Nova came with an extra ring; it's red so that you won't mix it up with the white ring, that way you can use one ring for sweet stuff and the other for savory. If the IP hadn't come with the extra ring I would have bought one. It's a good idea to have two!

I just started learning how to cook a few months ago after getting married and moving away from my parents. I put an IP on our registry as I had seen them in a few homes I tutored at. I had no idea how amazingly useful it would be as I slowly learned how to cook the basics like raw chicken and hamburger helper. Now I’m making a new recipe almost every other week and love having friends over for dinner. The only accessory I got was a glass lid because I enjoy seeing my “creations” when slow cooking. A few of these look really useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining everything!! I love that you are frugal and wanting to get the best “bang for your buck”. Good sound advice . . . My husband wanted the instant pot a few years back . . . I am the primary cook and did not want another small kitchen appliance that I thought wouldn’t be used after the initial “wow, I’ve got an Instant Pot” wore off. Two years later it had only been used for seasonal soups and an occasional roast, which I was happy with. Life change required traveling away from home 3 to 6 months at a time in our “New Used” RV essentially home away from home. The Instant Pot was recommended by other RVer’s, allows outside cooking, eliminates heating up the inside of your RV in the warmer months and inside cooking smells that linger longer than desired. Since we owned one we brought it along and boy oh boy did it do the job . . . Looking forward to a couple of new accessories since only using the basic tools included in box plus now I know exactly what is needed according to our meal Preferences. I will be reading more on your blog and viewing more of your videos. Thank you for sharing your honest experiences, and recommendations. All the best my friend!

I enjoyed your video. My experience had been somewhat different, so, per your invitation, I'll share. When I first got my IP, I bought the extra pot, glass lid, and an accessory kit. I have never used the glass lid, use the second pot frequently (and learned quickly not to nest them for storage), and found the accessory kit to be very good quality and very useful. The pot lifter is great, and I've never had to use a sling. I bought extra rings, but always wash the original ring and lid in the dishwasher and have never had any smells. Another item I bought and have stopped using is a steam director. I wanted to aim my steam at my stove's vent hood, but I don't find it makes much difference. I bought a pot in pot set and liked that it had a lid so I didn't have to wrap it in foil to prevent condensation. I really like the egg bite thing better than trying to balance separate cups, and I can only get two ramekins to fit in my IP, so they aren't very handy for me. I still find a lot of people intimidated by their Instant Pots, so thanks for making it more approachable.

Great to hear that word 'frugal', Lisa. Being similarly minded, I choose NPR (no pressure release) timings for hard boiled eggs, economising on cooking time and maximising use of input energy. If using dried chickpeas, I soak them overnight, rinse, then cook in fresh water for just _5 minutes plus full NPR,_ to save power and get better texture and taste than with non-soak, longer-cook IP methods. Add salt plus good olive oil or melted butter... _so_ much better than canned!

Your advice is really good. I was swept up in accessories when I first fell in love with my Instant Pot in mid-2018. Now most of those items are stuck in a large drawer unused. I use the trivet and the steamer basket often enough, and the red silicone sling is a must-have for making my cooking life easier (example: lifting a turkey breast in and out of the IP for the juiciest turkey in the world!). However, my most favorite gadget is my egg rack. It has 7 individual rings to hold eggs in perfect position for hard-cooking. I have used it almost every week for the last 18 months. It is just a matter of preference. I would also recommend a pair of small silicone finger mitts to help hold a hot pot while stirring. Your suggestions should help a lot of people who are new to IP cooking. Thanks for doing this. I am now a subscriber!

Good advice! Yeah, I bought those magnetic time charts and haven’t referred to one even once. What was I thinking? Cook times are listed in every recipe. I bought the glass lid about a year after I bought the pot. I like that it has a small hole in it which lets out steam that otherwise might make a regular lid dance around on top of the pot. It is very handy to use when you need to finish a recipe where you add ingredients at the end. I often make veggie soup where a lot of chopping is involved. I’ll chop as I go, starting with green beans, celery and carrots, sauté them in the pot while I chop other veggies. It’s much easier to take the glass lid off and put it back on after each addition. Sometimes I just add veggie broth and don’t even pressure cook. I found there isn’t much difference in time between cooking veggie soup with or without pressure. I find that when cooking just broccoli or corn it’s a lot less hassle to do it in the microwave- it’s faster and a lot less clean- up is involved- unless you maybe cook huge amounts, which I don’t. I think my best accessory is 2 extra rings. Kale and cabbage really love to impart their stinky personality onto the rings! Thank you for the video! Several of these items I had no idea existed.

Shop your relatives for old pressure cooker accessories (they too sold the trivets, and steamer baskets with the handles). I would not use anything INSIDE (under pressure) that has silikon or plastic. The steam gets hotter than boiling point and there is pressure, I would also not brew my coffee or tee in a plastic pan. Sturdy glass, ceramic, and stainless steel, or enamel pots (if they are not scratched) are fine. In the Chinese cuisine they use bamboo baskets but only for steaming (not under pressure and with the higher temperatures). As for an improvised handle, I would avoid aluminium foil. If need be a thin stripe of cotton or some kitchen yarn (a fabric stripe well rinsed, so it will not have any residue from washing powder). It will soak up some of the juices, but if the stripe is thin it will not be too much. Or any kitchen utensil from stainless steel (completey) that you could bend). And you could as well get started with a pressure cooker. have a metal pot (camping pot maybe) put it inside your pressure cooker, and maybe go at the lower temperature. I never liked the meat when it was directly in the pressucre cooker pot, the fibres were kind of coarse - more than when you simmered it on the stove - which is the milder cooking method (yes it got soft, but the high heat also "denatures" the proteins and fibers). But when taking it easy on the steam and giving it time it might work niceley. And the boiling water does not directly impact the meat if it is in the pot and not directly in the pressure cooker (or instapot). The heat should be well to regulate especially on an electric stove. And natural pressure decrease (by cooling down), it is the milder method.

I'm a long time pressure cooker and slow cooker owner and user but life changes have dictated that I downsize so I'm donating both to my local volunteer organization and I'm getting an instant pot tomorrow. I appreciate the sound advice so I subscribed to your channel. I look forward to catching up on your recipes. Thank you.

Hi Lisa, I just got my 3 qt. instant pot a week ago. found it at Walmart for a great price. went home and ordered a handful of accessories on Amazon to include a couple Asian & Thai instant pot meals books. I am a retired truck technician and am trying something new. some how I ended up with 2 glass lids for my 3 qt. instant pot. I also got 2 silicone lids, 2 extra liner / pot, 1 stackable steamer insert pan and a kit, the kit I noticed is going to give me yet another glass lid, to total 3.....lol. I am aware that ALL kits have some useless stuff in them but for the price and convivence of the stuff I actually wanted ( Steamer Basket, Glass Lid, Silicone Sealing Rings, Egg Bites Mold, Egg Steamer Rack and More ) yep it even has the magnetic cooking time charts...lol. which I think are ok for such a beginner like me to this, it will give me a starting point that I will adjust to my likings as I get more familiar. I do appreciate your videos and you sharing you experience. Thank You. I hope you don't mind if I reference you in my own KZbin videos. best of health to you and your family.

Love your video & hints! Just subscribed...Can you use the steamer basket for air frying too? I’m really curious because it seems like this would hold better than the trivet? Thanks so much!

Concur on the steamer pot. Use mine almost every time I use the IP. Great for making bone broth. Just pull it out and the broth is clear and ready to go.

@Los Fromla Also great for hard boiled eggs. Fill the basket and use the 5-5-5 method. Five minutes on pressure, five minutes on slow release, and five minutes in iced water. Perfect eggs every time.

When making chicken bone broth I put the bones in the steamer basket and just pull them all put at once.

I make a lot of deviled eggs. I've noticed most of the yokes aren't centered . I looked it up and says turn the eggs over half way they cooking. Of course I'm not going to do that in the IP. This qstn is for anyone who owns the egg rack. Do the yokes come out centered when you use it?

Thank you Lisa for your videos. As a relatively newbie to Instant Pot use, I really wanted advice on which accessories are worth buying. I believe the whisk is going to be my first purchase followed by the steamer basket. You are a marvelous instructor and very pleasant to listen to.

I just purchased a larger Instant Pot. I had a small knock-off pressure cooker that I had to guess at the time I was setting it for so lots of errors. I love your lists of liked items and have several already. The best advice to use my pot and see what I like to cook before I purchase anything is so awesome! What are 3 recipes you would recommend I start with for my pot?
@st.thomasre72514 жыл бұрын
Very nicely done. I did immediately look for accessories that I thought would encourage my use, like I knew from experience that I wanted to learn to steam veggies, so I did invest in a nice steamer basket that I do use all the time. I did learn quickly that I had a pan lid that fit perfectly, and that has been great. You are correct, though, that most are unnecessary and low quality.

Thank you for the information about the kits, had looked at them but, didn’t see a real value in them. Also, I know you recommended another seal but do you also recommend replacement vent seals as well? If so, how often would you recommend both seals to be replaced?
@rcole66794 жыл бұрын
Best IP accessories: 1) silicone one way steam diverted. Has to be one way only, to be effective. 2) mesh strainer basket 3). IP lids for storing leftovers. Most useless: pot grippers, too many extra gaskets ( food smells never transfer from one dish to another), but having an extra on hand may come in handy, if one breaks. But they seem very durable. Still haven’t used my PIP double broiler. Meat will always take longer to cook than side dishes.,,can’t understand combining them at the same cooking time. Veggies would always overcook with meat in the pot. Good point on the kits! Best to but a la carte! True that! Buy as you go, cuz you may already have a good substitute. One more perfect accessory; Get the biggest Pyrex bowl which will easily fit in your IP. For an 8qt IP, 7 cup bowl is biggest you can get. I cook and store oatmeal all the time and there’s no pot to scrub! Like your Ekovana cheesecake pan. I’ve made one awesome cheesecake, but use gf premodern crust and didn’t need my rubber/glass cheesecake pan. Your’s looks much more versatile...

I haven't bought any accessories yet, but know I would use the steamer basket. My husband wants to do a boil and it would be so much easier with the basket. What I really enjoyed was your reason why that particular one. I am glad I saw this before ordering just any basket.

Thanks for the video. I was going to buy an 'accessory kit' and the magnet timetables, and now realize I need to learn how to COOK w/the IP, first! THEN I can decide what "I" need. Much appreciated!

Great video, thanks. I actually have an Insta Pot (Duo Evo Plus) on it's way and look forward to using it. Based on the things I want to cook, I went ahead and ordered a set of nesting steamer baskets. The model I ordered has a sous vide function so these will also serve to keep the food off the bottom, but also under the water. One accessory that might not be specific to Insta Pot that everyone who cooks needs is a decent fast read thermometer. They are like $15 on Amazon. No more having to cut into meat to see if it's fully cooked or cooked to the point you want and you can check baked goods by temperature rather than trying to figure out if the toothpick or knife came out clean or not. A kitchen scale is a close second, especially for those who bake.

I just want to say THANK YOU!! I watched this video BEFORE heading over to Amazon and order order order!! It was the glass lid that I was looking for, for when I decide to make my own yogurt. I did what you suggested and Voilà!! Low and behold, I have a vented glass lid that fits my 3qt! But I made sure the Instant Pot glass lid also had the vent whole. And it did! You just save me some money for something I already had🤑🤑 Thanks again☺️

Best advice I found in your video is NOT to buy any accessories until people have actually used their Instant Pot first and discover their habits with this awesome kitchen appliance. I definitely got excited and bought a bunch of accessories when I first ordered my Instant Pot and of course there are still some I have yet to use.

I make egg beaters for my husband and I will say that the silicone egg bite molds with built-in handles and trivet is definitely worth the money. You get 2 molds with lids for $20 on Amazon. You can also put things like salsa, cheese, etc. and make little egg omelet bites. It cleans really well and you just put a little cooking spray in them before putting in your eggs. They pop out easily and it only takes 8 minutes on the pressure cook setting.

I use my extra trivet to hold wax paper or parchment paper down on the steamer basket or bowl to keep water out of baked goods. I can also stack 2 types of foods using my egg trivet with my other 2 trivets,, as each is a different height. I found a small kit with a steam diverter, a steamer basket and a egg bits cooker for $16 on Amazon. A good deal, with nothing I don't want, but you gotta spend the time and look thru all the other kits to find what works for you!

I really appreciate your information, and loved looking at this video. I bought my first instant pot two days ago and have only made one pulled chicken recipe in it. I followed your advice and checked my pots that I already have, and two of my covers are glass and will fit my 3 quart Instant pot, thank you for that tip, now I am wondering is there anything that I will cook without needing to add water to my instant pot.
