When I first came here to watch the play I kind of rolled my eyes thinking "Ugh... here goes another twenty minutes of my life that I wasted." I'm actually pleasantly surprised at the fact that I liked it. This is how it goes: The two woman who are in the play seem to have a small squabble about whether or not Mrs. Wright committed the crime of killing her husband. Shortly, as the two woman continue to talk Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale find a sewing that Mrs. Wright was working on. They notice at the end of the piece the stitches are all over the place and unusual. As the play progresses, Mrs. Hale talks about how Mrs. Wright was before she was married and often refers to her then as Minnie Foster when talking about her from thirty years ago. Mrs. Hale continues to talk about how Mrs. Wright (Minnie Foster) used to sing in the choir and has a lovely voice, but once she married Mr. Wright she stopped singing because he didn't like it. They soon find a bird cage and pounder on whether or not Mrs. Wright had a bird due to the fact they didn't see a bird. Rummaging through her things some more they find the small canary in a box with it's neck wrung. That is then when they connect the murder of Mr. Wright to be done by Mrs. Wright. She killed her husband the same way he killed her bird. The two woman realize this and hide the evidence sympathizing with her. I hope you all do well!

This is a very interesting play. Glaspell's husband almost forced her to write it in a week. It is said that this is a play that shows how women look at the world in contrast to men's look. Both female characters find the truth about this crime because they see clues in a certain way while men are looking for them in a usual manner. But most important is that women turn themselves into a jury that judges from a feminine point of view and they absolved the woman erasing the proofs they found. This story was based on a true story that Glaspell was approaching as a journalist. At first, she condemned the wife that killed her husband but when she visited her house Glaspell understood this woman's situation and changed her mind. Apparently, from this case, Glaspell left journalism and turned to playwriting

16:25 misses some of the most crucial lines in the whole skit. "Yes-good; he didn't drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters..." "I think she would 'a wanted a bird. But what do you suppose went with it?" and Mrs. Hale's crucial line comparing Mrs. Wright to the bird. "she was kind of like a bird herself - a real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and - fluttery. How - she - did - change."
@KimBTown8 жыл бұрын
Kudos!!
@Englishteacherwin7 жыл бұрын
And misses the "We think" in "the cat got it" - Very important. At this point the women had agreed there was no cat. Now Mrs. Hale opens the door for Mrs. Peters to agree or disagree - Mrs. Peters allows it and joins the cover-up. .

Watching this for my Intro. to Drama class, but remember reading this in high school. Dunno why, but I always liked this play. I just love how the women found out her motive and decided to cover for her despite her killing someone. It really shows how women had to band together back in old times since love marriages were quite rare.. Everything looked perfect from the outside, but the inside was surely rotten. Façades really are scary things.

I think the actors in this this play did it all wrong. It felt more like they were more concerned about playing the stereotypical early 1900's individual, rather than really paying attention to the historical and social context. It's clear that they didn't focus nearly enough on the context or tone that the script dictated. The woman's tone should have been much more somber, defensive, and bewildered than so obliging and explanatory.

I don't understand why some people didn't like this! I throughougly enjoyed this short play. I admit I was worried with intro part, but I think that woman may have stepped into that role last minute and learned the lines as best as she could in a short time--for clearly Mrs. Peters knew her lines well. I also didn't love the height of Mr. Hale to the rest of the cast in his opening lines as he stood forward he towered over them in that placement and camera angle perspective, but he actually is a very good actor. They all were. You have to keep in mind this is an understated play, not a loud, theatrical play like The Little Mermaid. These people all looked and acted appropriate to their parts. It felt natural-like it should. It relayed everything just right. If they had over acted it with large hand movements and over-the-top voices we would have been put off. I am pleasantly surprised by this little gem. Thanks for sharing it with the public! :) You can be proud! Christine

This was a very interesting play. I love the subtle hints of rebellion from the two women. All of you did a fine job with this! Also, to those who commented, "I'm only here for an assignment" and "This was an awful play" I say SHAME ON YOU. Theatre is one of the finest arts out there, but y'all are blinded by crap like tik tok and other social media, to see what TRUE art is. Not to mention, REALITY check, not everyone is as entitled and rich as you to have fancy equipment to make what you call 'better quality' content. In fact, you are too wimpy to make a video longer than 15 seconds. Many of the classic writers such as Susan Glaspell who wrote "Trifles" risked their lives because what they wrote was against the laws of the time, because they wrote about equality and freedom. Today, because of their brave efforts to ensure equal rights for everybody regardless of age, race, gender, and other discriminations, you are able to make content about whatever the crap you want to without consequence. All you ungrateful and selfish people need to think about the people that gave you this freedom and appreciate their work for what it is. I'd love to see anyone of you write a play that wins a Pulitzer prize. I don't think you can. To all the theatre nerds out there, BLESS YOU, you are the people that keep creativity alive, and I appreciate all the hard work you put into making wonderful productions like this one. THANK YOU.

I’m here cause I’ve got an audition coming up but if you’re here for an English class I’ve got you! : The entire play is about the relationship between women and men. Even though the men are looking for physical evidence of motive for Mrs. Wright killing her husband their wives care more about the motive than they do. When the wives are looking around at how the house was kept they start to feel for her. The broken jars of fruit and the quilt are things that normal wives were supposed to be in charge of and when the men insult how the house was kept they automatically blamed it on the woman of the house. The bird cage is obviously symbolic to the fact that Mrs. Wright was a prisoner in her own home. When you find out Mr. Wright killed the bird it’s the motive that the Attorney and Sheriff were looking for. And when Mrs. Peters goes to leave and the Attorney says “Mrs. Peters doesn’t need supervising” it’s not because he trusts her it’s because he doesn’t believe that a woman could ever be clever enough to hide something from men. I’m sorry that I’m not that good with words but I hope this makes sense for some of y’all! :)
