What is trigeminal neuralgia? Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, is a neuropathic pain condition that involves the trigeminal or fifth cranial nerve, which supplies sensory information to the skin and mucous membranes of the face, as well as motor information for the muscles of mastication. And because of that, pain can often be triggered by chewing, brushing the teeth, shaving, or even just smiling!

I was told this is what I had. But my pain was nonstop. I was prescribed carbamazepine and it stopped within a couple of days. However, the medication gave me very concerning side effects. I was feeling like I was going to pass out constantly and was too weak to do anything. When I was told to stop taking the medication, the pain didn’t return. I had gotten an MRI but nothing was found. It is the worst pain in the world whatever it was and it felt like no one cared about relieving my pain. I was prescribed Naproxen at the hospital. I took Tylenol and ibuprofen around the clock. But it never helped. And by the time I when to my physician. I had high liver enzymes because of all of the Tylenol I had been taking. I feel really sorry for people who experience a pain that can’t be seen because people become really apathetic when you don’t have a concrete diagnosis.

I have trigeminal neuralgia and also in nursing school. this video helps. However, I would also mention to follow up on sodium lab results if taking oxcarbazepine due to risk of low salt. I had hyponatremia from this medication, but it all depends on how the patient handles it. Anti-seizure medications can also increase the risk of suicidal ideations.
