You are right. There is a huge difference between covering a song and making it your own. There is a scene in the movie Ray where he is "covering" songs and the producer stops him and says this is great if I want to hear the original artist, but I want to hear what Ray Charles sounds like. Here we have what Trigger Finger sounds like. They made this song theirs.
