It is very helpful to understand human emotions and behaviors that may "masquerade" as social/ personal problems but is actually an impairment of one's internal chemistry, nervous system that can be addressed therapeutically and with support of caring of family & friends.

I've only known and/or accepted I have bipolar and just in the last 7 years. You are 100% correct. I began to notice in 2006 that if my dreams did not finish and I did not sleep enough, I was dangerous and worthless that day at work and in general. Now I know that sleep is ABSOLUTELY huge in this and I in the past maybe 5 years have tried to let ppl around me know this. Sleep for me is not like for you, 6 or 7 hours or less even a full 8 or occasional 9. My mind and body need 10 hours ideally 12 hours each night and sometimes I can sleep more than 12 hours, not without waking up a whole lot but that's another problem. Sleep is to a bipolar person as food is to people without it. Without it, you can not function properly and for too long.

Sleep is key, but my manic episodes are what causes my insomnia. I can't get more than 4 hours of sleep.

I think mania without bipolar disorder is extremely disenfranchised. I personally go through these bouts, and don't necessarily have bipolar disorder. It's unipolar mania. Like the opposite of clinical depression. Clinical mania? But it's nowhere near as amazing as it sounds. Sure, I'm more productive. Sure, I can do things more efficiently. Sure, I can stack so many things in my schedule that it's not funny. But I don't feel like any of that's happening. I only feel like the negative aspects of these are happening. And it's hell.
