You don't must use sec x function it is easier to use (sin^2 x + cos^2 x = 1) and divide by cos^2 x and you get tan^2 x + 1 immediately. One less identity. :) You are doing a good job.

Always put math definitions in your own words to make sure you understand them. Usually textbook definitions are confusing. Then when you understand them you become better users of all the tools. Hope that makes sense.
