Reference angles are acute measures that tell you how many degrees are between the x axis and the terminal side. If your angle is say 200 degrees, the reference angle is 200-180. If your angle is 280 then 360 - 280...you compare your angle to 360 because you are in quadrant 4. If your angle is 20, the reference angle is 20 because your angle is already acute.

There are two ways of thinking about that. One is it is not possible for a length to be negative. This is true, but I like to put them on the sides of the reference triangles anyway. My students remember the signs when setting up their final trig ratios more often when I show the negative signs around the reference triangle. Second the negative would be cancelled anyway by the even powers of 2.

@pejonic1 The standard period of sine is 2pi. In both of your equation, which are not equal/the same graph, you have a 3 in front of the x. That is a transformation to the period. So your sine functions would have a period of (2pi)/3. I hope this helps.

Your wife's seems like an idealist, like myself, but hopefully teachers are paid better in the future. I've read different reports on education detailing the private money being spent to control text books, adjunct professors hired on contracts to divert money outside of classrooms, and while the quality of public education seems to be diminishing the cost of it continues to rise. I believe in public education, make no mistake, but how you're teaching is closer to how I imagine the future of education. 564 videos is indeed impressive, and it wouldn't take an "army" of professors to teach an incredible number of students in the future. It amazes me how much you, as one person, can accomplish. It's inspiring. I see your video hit counts. You've taught ALOT of people for FREE. Sorry for missing the question you posted. You may want to watch Evaluating Inverse Trigonometric Functions Full Length. I explain where the restricted range of values of come from for inverse trig functions. Basically inverse sine and inverse tangent functions have restricted ranges of -90 to 90, where inverse cosine is 0 to 180.

I have always loved Math... and it's always come fairly easy to me. Even though I worked in the Computer Networking field, my hobby was Computer Programming... which takes a lot of logic (math) thinking. I have been a substitute teacher since 2010. I have also been tutoring Algebra I for the last 2 years.

Also... I know Math Teachers earn far less than someone who sets up computer networks for businesses... but I didn't enjoy that job as much as I enjoy subbing in Math classes and tutoring Math. I'll accept the lower pay for the satisfaction of knowing a child understands the Math they are doing. I get excited about teaching Math, which in turn gets the kids excited (even though they think I'm a bit wacky that I like the subject so much).

The difference between Mr. Tarrou and other teachers is you explain why, (ie: why is 3 negative) and thats something other teachers just don't seem to understand, when I asked "why" in my trig class my professor told me "because I told you so" Thanks, My. Tarrou!

I did not find the actual measure of theta of course...just the fact that the x coordinate must be negative for Cos to be negative and y must be positive for CSC to be positive. The only quadrant that occurs together is quadrant 2.

I don't find the exact value of there in these values. I just need to determine what quadrant the angle is in so my signs are correct as I set up the other trig functions. The movement of X is negative in quadrant 2 & 3 and Y is negative in quadrant 3 & 4
