In this edition of Wilson Center NOW, we are joined by Rebecca Pincus, Director of the Wilson Center’s Polar Institute. She highlights the recently announced Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE-PACT) by the US, Canada, and Finland. The collaboration is intended to “strengthen shipbuilding and maritime industrial capacity through closer cooperation on polar icebreakers and counter Russia and China in the Arctic and Antarctic.”

I read an article about westerners vacationing on the Russian Yamal back in the 90's, it was a fascinating adventure that I wanted to go one day. Too bad, I don't think it's offered these days. Peace!✌

Canadian yards will probably build most of them. One Canadian yard is in Finland.

My understanding is the US ships will be built in the US. because of the Jones Act. Again my understanding is that Davy a Canadian yard which owns a yard in Finland will be the lead and will look to buy ayard in the US.

How many icebergs does Australia expect to need to break through with their share of the icebreakers?

Australia has a HUGE Antarctic territories. We need ice breakers to be able to reach our various research stations on Antarctica in the Antarctic winter (when there is a couple km's of extra ice) for emergency evacuations and re supplying.

This is a reaction to the Chinese moves to move in to the Artic. The USA used to build hundreds of navy ships Now it only has one or two yards left.

As if the Trilateral commission wouldn't have better things to do. Ice breakers are "Nice to have" But it doesn't fix the "No goods to ship" problem.
