Common Chicory Identification - Cichorium intybus

Hey guys, in this video we go over the identification features of Common Chicory. This plant is extremely prolific along roadsides and is easily spotted by its light blue to indigo colored flowers with ten to fifteen petals. Each petal will have distinct notches or indentions along the top. The leaves of Chicory are alternating and can have several variations. On the top of the plant the leaves are small and lance shaped, however they get much larger the further down the plant you go. Also the leaves will change shape to start to appear like Dandelion leaves with lobes and teeth along the margins, especially for the basal rosette. The stem is round and woody in texture and the plant can produce multiple stems with leaves and flowers.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in Appalachia with grandparents close by who took me foraging. I've been having a marathon of your vids and thought I knew the old ways of natural medicines and edibles, but I quickly realized I don't know squat compared to you. I am so glad I found your channel. More people should learn these things biggest reason is to get away from the crap we're getting fed by big pharm. Its a great plant i have several and am thankful for them. The rosette in spring resemble dandelion leaf and are larger then the stalk leaves. The roots when dug up in early spring and in the fall made into a alcohol tincture makes a natural prebiotic.:) Great for gut health! Along with other health benefits!

@@StarDreamMemories hi there, I get the chicory tea from Amazon which is its root roasted and grinded. I am really not sure how we are able to harvest it ourselves tho. But maybe you could harvest enough roots and roast it at a certain level and use it as a tea. 🤗

So true I went by country road gravel road ditch where they do not spray and I dug a plant up took it home and stuck it in the dirt and I have plenty of chicory now 30 year and it’s spreading which is exactly what I want just have to make sure if you transplanted you don’t put it along with any other garden plants or herbs because they proliferate well just like dandelion

That is the root, dug in very early spring but mainly in the fall after the first frost. This video was more about identifying it than its usage, but hopefully I'll be able to do some on that in the future.

Toast the cleaned root until dk brown like coffee n grind it. Use as you wd coffee grounds.

Leafs are small on the video. Leafs are very large here. 8 inches x 10 inches in spring. Once flowering the leafs get much smaller at about 3 ft to 4 ft up.

Chicory can have multiple flower colors, even ranging into pink and white actually, though those are rather rare it is possible. I'm not sure what causes it however.

I have a plant growing in my backyard that I am trying to identify. It smells similar to oregano. It's about 14 to 18 inches tall and spreads out like a tiny tree, bushy on top. Small oval leaves and tiny white flowers, reddish stems. Any idea what it might be?

Flavor. No caffeine that I know of; you dig up the root, clean it, roast it till dark brown, then grind and steep in hot water. The resulting liquid is a bit thicker/soft on the tongue but the taste is very similar to coffee.
