Trilogy was recently granted access to enter into the Kahoolawe Reserve, which extends around the entire island for two-miles, and conduct a Huaka’i (an educational journey). The weather was threatening to send some surprises to the day, but overall it ended up being perfect with a light drizzle, glassy conditions, and a high overcast which was actually a nice break from the heat.
A representative from KIRC (Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission) provided us with great information along the way of the history of the places we were able to get close to. The Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project sent some reps as well, and they were there to do a bird count, as well as answer any questions we had. (We learned a lot more about the Great Frigate - ‘Iwa… not a very nice bird)
As a super cool surprise, the KIRC even allowed us to get off on land, and take a tour of their basecamp! This is the same camp that Trilogy staff volunteered for a 4-day retreat back in May.
