Trimley Level Crossing

Friday June 21 2019 at 11.55. 66722 (Sir Edward Watkin) and 66776 (Joanne) built in 2016. This crossing was filmed in 2012 and nothing on it seems to have changed since then. Up until now it has never been possible to see two trains here at the same time as the line was singled just to the right of the crossing. At the end of the video you can briefly see the station on the left and then the view to the right showing the new left hand track with the crossover where the lines used to merge. Strangely, Network Rail call this a passing loop when its really an extension of the double track. They say that up to ten extra trains can be run because of it. Surprising few. That is because the new track is in the wrong place. After the end of this new section of track there is now 7 miles of single track, then a passing loop and then another 2.5 miles of single track. A passing loop should have been built in the middle of the long length, not at the end of it. On narrow country roads with passing places, they don't put the passing places at the end and leave a long length without any in the middle. Apparently this is "a great example of what can be achieved".

As you might recall about the new track, freight operators had enough of passenger trains stopping freight coming in and out of Felixstowe so a new track is being added in. Unfortunately this also leaves the station with an uncertain future.
