I'm glad you are a little ahead of me weather wise since I'll be trimming my 4 boxwoods in a couple more weeks. It's great to have a refresher, and excellent tip to use the fabric or tarp to easily collect the trimmings. I completely butchered my boxwoods the first time I trimmed them, nearly cried but thankfully they grew out of that first awful trim!

Good morning and what a fun coffee with Laura video! It is so fun to watch you trim things up and I wonder how your get the nerve to just go after a plant with hedge trimmers. You have such a good eye to be able to see the shape you want and only trim off what you need, I think I would be trimming until it ended up very tiny lol Thanks again for sharing you skill and wonderful ideas about plants with us!!

I love the way you speed things up for the final video and it would be really interesting for you to post (in the comments or description below) how much time it actually takes you. Yes, this video was very helpful. I am new to boxwood plants and wasn't quite sure when the best time was for trimming. My temperatures are still doing a roller coaster cycle, with 50-60 and then it cools down to almost 32 degrees. I guess that I will have to wait until the temperature stabilizes. Thanks for the very informative content.

I’ve always heard that you need to get down in the center and take out some growth to let air in there? Maybe that’s just here in the south? Loved watching this - going to get out and do mine - have lots in a small courtyard - helpful to see the drop cloths...with the “stay at home” order this year, a good time to clean up the garden! All best wishes

Would making a chicken wire cone help with the pruning into shape and training by giving that guide? Boxwood with the one dead side... a fancy topiary perhaps? The yellowing can also be caused by a ph issue... plants take up minerals at certain ph ranges and in combination with other minerals and even sometimes some minerals prevent others from being taken up... all things to be considered...

I would use that green spray paint for bushes and shrubs to cover that tiny spot of dead on that one old boxwood.
@Jack-oc2xq5 жыл бұрын
Then you would end up with even more dead part on your boxwood
@vadaann12795 жыл бұрын
Jack it is not regular spray paint. It’s specifically for plants.
@Jack-oc2xq5 жыл бұрын
Vada Ann it’s still not a good idea to use, it will get on the leaves and prevent them from photosynthesizing and you will end up causing more damage to the plant, the proper and sensible solution would be to prune out the dead wood and fertilizer or else transplant it. That spray is meant for dead patches on grass.

Question for you Laura. I grew up with my grandmother telling me to prune in a month with an "R" in it. What is your professional opinion? I live in zone 7 if that matters. Plus, last year a gardner from a nursery told me about using "Milorganite" for greening up my bushes and yard. I have to tell you, after using it for two years now, we love it.
@Jack-oc2xq5 жыл бұрын
That’s a good rule to follow for many things, September-March is when most plants are either going dormant, dormant or just breaking dormancy so you probably can’t go too wrong with that rule but every different plant has different requirements so it is much more sensible to learn the appropriate times to prune whatever plant you do intend to prune, (an example being lavender, you should never prune it in winter, so if you prune in December you will probably cause damage to the plant)
@vickieb34635 жыл бұрын
Your right Jack. Sorry I wasn't clear on the seasons. We get excited in March in the South and sorta burnout from the mosquitos and hot weather by September. And, we have burn bans, also. Any pruning is usually done by then so we can discard our yard waste and on to planting bulbs.
