Hi, from San Diego. I am a recently retired programmer/database developer. My husband and I are going to be in England next month and will be in Bath during the Jane Austin festival. However, we will probably not be in costume, but it will be cool to see so many participants in costume. It looks like a lot of fun! I think the 1 1/2” looks good. I think you could get away with separate sections. The red scarf brings out the purple tone in the blue silk belt. I have always been interested in Historical costuming but have not pursued it seriously, just for Halloween. I enjoy hand sewing, needlework and beading.

I think you’re right about finishing what’s on the board and then just taking the time to chill before your trip. You’ll have more fun if you’re not spending half of it recovering from getting ready for it in the first place. For the q&a, what’s your favorite fabric to work with? Or inversely are there any you’ve sworn off? Personally I hate working with moire (bridesmaids dress nightmare).

Thanks for showing the polonaise. I don't know how to attach a picture of the finished sleepy hollow dress. Sorry. But my client is very happy with it. YAY!. Hearts on comments are brilliant. (hailing from Calgary, AB, Canada here). My son said that he is jealous of the apple tour. YAY inch and a half smashed ruffle! Cathy would definitely suggest that you chill before you go and not stress yourself out. The necklace looks perfect with the dress. 35F isn't cold. It's practically shorts weather. The scarves are lovely, nonetheless. You look adorable in the bonnet with the bangs (and then you took them off...so funny). I hope you are feeling better. Take care of you, you are almost done everything for your trip.

Hi. I'm Maiken from Denmark. I cannot sew, even if my life depended on it... But I do like to watch videos about historical sewing, they are oddly calming and I do enjoy watching. What I can do is some serious knitting, as a colleague said today. I have considered tapping into some historical knitting - but I'm not there yet.

Totally not new here, but I realized I haven't introduced myself. I live in Eastern Oregon and have nearly my entire life. I love all things nerdy, historical, and costumey. I've never really attempted to make historical costumes before, I've always made fantasy and/or Halloween type costumes for our kids or for the LARP we participate in. Historical fashion fascinates me, and I am excited to start working on recreating pieces. I'm currently working on an 18th Century Ensemble for a masquerade ball we're attending for Halloween. We're nearly empty nesters (one of four left at home), so it will be fun to do more events in costume now that our time is a little more flexible. I absolutely love that you show the frustrations of sewing projects. Sometimes, even the simplest task seems impossible, even for a seasoned seamstress, and it's refreshing to see others have speedbumps, too. I've been sewing for nearly 40 years, and I feel like my learning curve has been exponential the past 5 or 6 years. Thank you for a great channel to watch!

The paisley pattern, originally called buta or boteh meaning flower, was first used in the early 17th century (1600s). So, yes, paisley is period correct for 18th century, mostly on shawls, though, by that time. It's wonderful to have a family member who is as much a history nut as I am. :)

Paisley pattern originates from the middle east and was brought back to England by the merchant navy in the 17th Century. It was extremely expensive, the pattern was originally woven into the fabric. Then came the industrial revolution, and paisley could be produced at a fraction of the original cost. It became very popular.

I'm new to your channel. I first started hearing about you through Bernadette Banner when she was doing the Lady Sherlock. However it wasn't until all the videos of costume college started coming out that I finally followed a link to your channel. I hope that isn't too terrible of me. Truth be told I'm still behind on some of the other videos leading up to costume college. I only recently finished Lady Sherlock. Anyways introductions. I'm Kristy, I have 5 kids, 3 cats, 6 ducks, a bunch of chickens, and just recently added a puppy to the mix. I'm originally from the beautiful Central Coast of Ca, but now live in sunny Arizona on 3 acres (becuase you can't buy an outhouse in California for under $450,000) I statted sewing when I was 8 or 9, by hand. I'm entirely self taught. I started doing embroidery when I was 11. My mom finally broke down and taught me to use her sewing machine when I turned 14. I love seeing. I made my wedding dress with the help of my mother in law. I actually stopped sewing for about 6 years, beucase the babies started coming and I felt I couldn't sew at the time. Then of course life just kept happening. It took wanting to make a dress for my daughter for me to blow the dust off the machine to get back into it. I mostly sew dresses and skirts. I started sewing with knits about 3 years ago.My husband and I enjoy going to Renaissance faire. They have a huge one here. We went a couple years ago with my mom last minute I slapped together a pair of dresses and shifts for my self and duaghter. I have plans to make myself a new dress and shift for faire this year. Hopefully a pair of stays too. Something a little more period appropriate. And something for my husband. Since the last 2 years we went half dressed. Which should be much easier than in past years now that I have an actual sewing room. Well more of an office or bonus room off the master bedroom, that I have to share with my husband. He sews too just not as much as I do. Ok questions. I have a couple. Aside from patterns for fashion what are some good historical costuming books? Where do you get patterns for your costumes? Do you self draft or does someone make them for you or do you just fly by the seat of your pants? Finally what is (are) your cat(s) name(s)? I'm in a group on FB called sewing with cats. We share pictures of our cats and our projects there. One lady even went to costume college. One of her costumes was the Dead Cat Lady, lol. So costume college is now officially on my bucket list.

I commented before, just the once so I'll properly introduce myself I suppose! Im Zee, I live in the Netherlands, in the high North now, rather than anywhere near the big icky cities, though my city is a uni city and therefore probably still big if slightly less icky. It's funny, when/if I do manage the spoons to make a dress, I've been thinking about leaving it untrimmed! I'm not a fan of trim myself and I like my clothing to be well, unobtrusive, and maybe thats strange for historical costumes, especially 18th century ones, but like people were still individuals in history too? They must have had preferences like this, whether its more or less trim or a love for a particular outdated sillhouette and I bet they still got their clothes made exactly how they wanted them! So that means we can do that too, if you ask me!

I’m often bundled up in a cardigan, fleece jacket, and a shawl at work. So I tend to get plenty of use out of my shawls. I also wear hand knit wool socks year-round. Pretty much, if I’m comfortable, it’s too hot for everyone else. XD and if I’m hot, then it’s really bad.

Hi Noelle!! I'm Miranda from the UK and I'm a graduate student, researching early medieval textiles and how they were used in wider culture in the 18th and 19th centuries onward. My Q for Q&A: How did you go about finding a costuming community and friends etc? Sewing feels like a pretty lonely hobby to me and especially in Europe I've found it hard to find like minded people. P.S., fun fact: Paisley pattern is named after the town in Scotland where it was woven in the 19th century. I grew up nearby. And you can totally use it for regency period as it was extremely popular then. :)

When you put the bonnet on, I literally gasped!!! It looked so good!!! You are going to look so adorable!!! Squee!!! I have some happy Jane Austen flutterings! (I’m channeling Mrs. Bennet! Ha!). ... I hope you feel better soon (and not getting something more serious!). Get lots of rest! You’re gonna need it for your trip! Q’s: What was your first costume? What was your first historical costume? What is your favorite fashion era? If you had all the resources, time, skills, what would be your “dream dress/outfit”? Team Peanut butter or Team Nutella?😁

Enjoying your vlogs. Will you be doing anything to stop fraying on your trim?

Something about your pressed ruffle that looks so ‘right’ to me. It’s as if the gown has been stored in a treasure chest and recently brought out for display. Heirloom sewist from Alabama.

I almost choked on my tea. I looked up a copy (today, 29th Dec.) on Amazon UK and they want £532 for a used *paperback* copy (one available) and that's not including postage.

If you still need to break in your shoes, a hair dryer and thick socks do wonders. It's a trick I learned from my old roommate who was in beauty pageants.

1 1/2 inch trim was the "dig-a-de bomb". Q - What other locations have your visited for the purpose of costuming? I loved all your costumes at Costume College 2019 and the way you took on the personality of the Watson costume's character during the VLog skit. You were beautiful as both Lady Watson and Iron Woman. Q - Was the costume inspired by Iron man considered historical due to its style? Last Q - If you weren't working in you current technical field by day and as a costumer by night, would you be an actress;)?

If I hadn't already subscribed the "just pettin' a boob" would have clinched it for me. My question is what do you do with the costumes once they've been worn for whichever event you've made them for? Do they just sit in the closet?

Loved "The Paradise"! It has a similar feel to "Mr. Selfridge". Do you have a favorite costume drama? I can't pick a favorite myself, and I'm always searching for new ones to watch! (I'm new. I found you through Bernadette, who I'd stumbled upon a week or two before because of her 2018 CoCo vlog. I don't costume at the moment, but I love 18th century clothing in particular.)

Yes, paisley is appropriate for Regency, but your search term will be Kashmir shawl, not Paisley. The boteh motif is very old, but the shawl industry in Paisley, Scotland, did not take off until later in the century.
@Lolibeth
@Lolibeth 5 жыл бұрын
The search term you want is "boteh" for the 'paisley' pattern. All the shawls have those sorts of patterns because they were being imported from the Indian subcontinent as luxury goods, being made of handloomed cashmere. A little later is when you get the cheap knockoffs full of cultural appropriation and crappy materials.

Pasley was appropriate but with more background and farther apart. I took Sara's class at CoCo (it was for Civil War but still). They were also smaller in scale. :D

HAHA! 80s/90s Child reference!!! Love it Glad you had a good sewing week, but sad you aren't feeling great. I know what you mean. I tend to watch shows and crochet or sew when I'm stressed. I was at work mostly but I did get an 18th Century Jacket fixed (for a client) and an 18th Century Apron. :D OH! I also made my niece an 1860s doll. :) She has two others that I made her last year and she asked for a red-headed one (she has a blonde and brunette. LOL) She is making the outfits for the dolls. It's cute. :D LOVE the Paradise!!! And I totally want that pin magnet.

As a fellow political science major, I'm also loving The Family (although I'm only one episode in so far). It's a really sobering reminder how many un-elected people there are wielding influence over our government. For your Q&A, I'm curious what you think your channel will look like once this trip is over and you don't have to sew at such an intense pace anymore. Will we see fewer vlogs and more other types of videos?

I was curious about the book History & Step-by-Step Techniques by Kendra Van Cleave so I went on Amazon to see if I could get it and it went for $499-$900 so..... I will be adding that to my library lol! Watch Derry Girls on Netflix it is so funny. Question: I believe you said once that you came to this world of historical clothing from cosplay. Your Ironman costume looks like the two interests came together in this dress. What was your segway into the historical side of sewing? What is your favorite decade to pull your inspiration from?

Hi, I'm a crafter that hails from southern Al. I've actually started a KZbin Chanel recently, where I'll show how I do different crafts/learn new things. I've started with reclaiming my craft room and will be showing the progress from clean up to completion. So if anyone wants to see what's going on let me know and I'll send you a link. Thank you!

question for the q&a I don’t know if u ever used a dslr for recording but how the heck do u get it to maintain focus for filming. I know what ur using now isn’t really a dslr but do u know how to get it to maintain focus like ur camera does. Also when did u start making “historical costumes”? Recommendation for a super noob like me with way to big ambitions lol
