Northern Sri Lanka is pretty good and has a different vibe since it’s all the Tamil dominated areas vs Sinhalese down South. Tribcomalee, Jaffna and Batticaloa along with Kilinochi and few other cities are Tamil speaking and was ravaged by the civil war for over 25 years. Btw, the strange bit you keep referring to is called Bajji or Bhaji in UK restaurants. Typically in UK, they just have the onion one but all the fried bananas covered in batter you ate In Tamilnadu and Kerala are Bhajjis. It can be any vegetable like onions, potatoes, plantains (raw banana), eggplant ( aubergines) or even hard boiled eggs or bread. The restaurants in UK seem to have the onion bhajis as the popular snack but plantain is the most popular one in Tamilnadu and Kerala along with Onion. Trinco and Jaffna are ok but not the best cities I like. The beach towns down south of Galle are beautiful and so is Nuwara Eliya up in the mountains. Ella is great but it has turned into some kind of backpacker hippie haven in the past decade but still worth the visit. East Coast of Sri Lanka has some great towns like Arugam Bay where tourists don’t normally go and the East coast has a different monsoon season so when it’s rainy in the West, the East is relatively drier.

@@Abraracourix The southern coast looks beautiful but definitely not our thing the crowd is pretty bad. Backpackers head over to arugam bay so we avoided that one. UK restaurants are rubbish and half are Pakistanis pretending to be Indian id bet. We have a fantastic Keralan in Blackburn though that makes proper food.

@@EllisWR The Southern Coast has umpteen different towns from Galle down and some are more visited than others by tourists and others, you probably won’t find any. Even lesser tourists in Arugam bay. It also depends on the months you go. There are lots of tourists between Dec-Feb but if you go later, you will hardly find them. Overall, Sri Lanka has less tourists than India. The northern towns are good but the beaches are best down south. As for Indian restaurants in UK, I can’t speak for the place with 4000 holes in Lancashire but London has no dearth of good Indian restaurants including all regional cuisines from Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra and Karnataka. So many new restaurants in London these days. And lots of Kerala food. The problem though is, most British folks are so used to eating the typical Indian fare in UK which is predominantly Gujarati and Punjabi food and the curries ( many of them invented in England or Scotland for the locals) and they don’t try food from the south. But London has lots of choices. I can’t imagine a Pakistani running a Kerala restaurant lol Pakistan food has a lot in common with the food from Punjab and even UP but nothing in common with Kerala cuisine lol Maybe people in Blackburn are not adventurous to try Indian food beyond what they know and keep referring to everything as “ curry” lol. Ultimately, the restaurants serve to the needs of the local diners.
@EllisWR
@EllisWR 2 ай бұрын
@@Abraracourix No the Keralan is spot on. Many Indian restaurants here are not Indian though and the food is pretty bad. True you have to suit the local palate or you won't make money. It's interesting because we didn't see another white person in India pretty much! But Sri Lanka was teeming with them, the problem there is anywhere around the tourist regions we found the people to be extreme liars and not hospitable. We do love Sri Lanka though away from all that!

@@EllisWR London has plenty of Kerala restaurants and all authentic food. You can go to Harrow or Wembley on Ealing Road and there are too many South Indian restaurants and also in Hounslow, East Ham and Tooting. Lots of Sri Lankan food in North London too. The typical British person’s idea of Indian food seems to be a gravy with chunks of meat served with rice or naan and samosas and poppadums. So lot of restaurants in UK serve to that palate. Most of the food is primarily from Punjab, UP or Gujarat and lots of dishes even invented in UK like Tikka Masala and Vibdaloos ( which are not Indian dishes). Indian cuisine is vast and very nuanced than a typical westerner’s idea of Indian food. The food in India changes every 100 kms and some are regional dishes. If you went up to Wayanad and Northern Kerala, the food is different from what you had in Southern Kerala. The Malabar cuisine is very unique and known for biryanis in Malabar style along with seafood and vegetable dishes unique to the Malabar region. Sri Lanka has much nicer beaches and clean. Lots of Indian beaches have turned to shite due to people littering and proliferation of plastics in the past 25 years which was not a thing before the turn of the century. Kerala and Northern Karnataka and Goa have some decent beaches but usually crowded during the season and the seas get very rough during the off season on the Arabian Sea. The Bay of Bengal coastline is polluted and also very dangerous due to the topography of the coastline and lots of people die not knowing the dangers of the coastline. Compared to the Indian beaches, the ones in Southern Sri Lanka are heaven and it’s usually less crowded any day of the year. The places you went up north in Sri Lanka is frequented by tourists. I am surprised you didn’t see any. The slightly relaxed tourist other than the SlamBang type western tourists usually get up to Jaffna and Trinco. But the beaches thee don’t compare to the ones down south. And typically, the further south you get to, there are lesser tourists. They all head to Mirissa and Dambulla and others where there are more hotels concentrated.

I hate to be a nerd in your videos but I did spend almost 7 years studying Buddhism. That was a Bodi tree you passed on the way into the springs. The Bodi tree is the species where Buddha found enlightenment. The real one is in India. Also, I think you should plan a 7 Stupa visit. There are 7 Stupas that contain the bones and one the bowl of Buddha himself. His body's bones and personal stuff of which there was little was split and placed in Stupas around the SE Asian countries and mostly in India. Sorry to nerd out on your channel. S.G. Buddha, the first Buddha, was cremated next to a River where he fell asleep and passed away. There is a Stupa there as well.

The branch of the actual tree that the Lord Buddha attained enlightened under was brought to Sri Lanka from India by a missionary. That branch has grown into a full grown Bodhi tree and is in Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest recorded tree in Sri Lanka and also a UNESCO heritage site and national treasure which is protected. 🙏

Did you know Trincomalee, in ancient times, was also known by the name of Gokanna (Sanskrit: ear of the deer), possibly in view of the shape of the Trincomalee Bay Those long thin fish are most likely barracuda and i think you were at Sandy Cove beach which is rated 17th out of 235 beaches in the Sri Lanka.The most popular beaches in the area include Uppuveli Beach, Nilaveli Beach, Marble Beach, and Kuchchaveli Beach. The hot springs of Kanniya origins are deeply rooted in folklore. Numerous tales of its beginnings exist; some believe that Lord Vishnu created the wells for King Ravana to perform the last rites for his allegedly deceased mother, Kanniya. Others say that King Ravana himself struck the rock with his sword seven times, after which the springs appeared. At the time of making this video , you have yet to see the true beauty of Sri Lanka . Yagshemash and wawaweewa Borat.😂😂😂

I once visited a really remote part of anuradhapura with my dad. It was an amazing experience. It was true sri lanka. I live in colombo so I don't get that experience often. Live was just simple. There was no electricity where we stayed so we were disconnected from the outside world. I saw the most beautiful sky I've ever seen. And my and my dad left the village and just walked for miles in a little road. You just don't feel walking. The sun was so bright yet we didn't feel a sweat unlike colombo. And we appearantly walked for 4 hours in direct sunlight and didn't feel a thing. There was something about those village houses that's awsome like I lived in Minecraft for 5 days

Salams from Colombo, Sri Lanka Looks like Trincomalee is underrated. Would’ve become a tourist spot only if our authorities spent some bucks to develop the place and make proper infrastructures. I have never visited any district in Eastern province but this video looks very inviting. Mostly in major towns you will find a lot of Muslim hotels aka restaurants and more often the food is incredible. Ole used to be dominant in beverage industry but sadly after the introduction of foreign beverages such as Coca cola, sprite they couldn’t face the competition due to tactful marketing strategies by those companies. Ole should sponsor you both 😅 Cheers ❤🥂

Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka needs kind tourists like you and me. We have been visiting Sri Lanka every year for the last 32 years. A beautiful place to visit with great people with almost 20,000 year culture with almost 3000 years of written history. Inscriptions have been there for thousands of years on stone slabs and on rocks. About 2000 years ago Sri Lankan (Siv Hela, Sihela or Sinhala) people wrote in books made of palm leaves. Unfortunately, for the last 520 years the Europeans, especially Portuguese, Dutch and English caused unimaginable damage to the country of Siv-Hele (Sinhale), her people and the culture. The British caused the biggest damage by killing many hundreds of thousands of people and forcibly taking over hundreds of thousands of acres of paddy/ rice fields that belonged to traditional Sinhala farmers. They created huge tea plantations and brought thousands of South Indian slaves to work in those stolen lands to grow and pluck tea for the Brits. When they left the country in 1948, they left the South Indian slaves in the country and created a huge rift between Sinhala nationals and generations of South Indians who were originally brought as slaves by the Brits. British ruled the country for almost 200 years using their "Divide and Conquer" method! Then, since 1983, the world's most ruthless and murderous terrorist group, LTTE, caused havoc in the country with the blessing of the Western enemies. Sri Lankan Government was forced to wage a "Humanitarian War" to save almost 300,000 civilians held at gun point by LTTE terrorists. They used them as a human shield. The Government forces sacrificed their own lives to save these innocent civilians from LTTE terrorists. Finally, the terrorists were defeated in 2009. Now, country is trying to bounce back from the 500-year European invastion. Still, some Western enemies try their best to destabilize this country. Please remember the 30-year was was NOT a civil war, but it was a war against a group of world's most ruthless and barberic terrorists. Please don't call it a "civil war", it was a "terrorist war" that was shamelessly funded by the Western enemies.
