Nice to see shoes and boots getting repaired instead of thrown away filling up the landfills. We are a wasteful bunch over here in the States.
@2011Rodders Жыл бұрын
It was a dying craft in the UK but seems to have resurged a bit luckily. Cobblers are one of the oldest trades and it would be such a shame to see it die out.
@AxLWake Жыл бұрын
The problem is also that such repairs are often almost as expensive as new shoes. And it's not easy to find a good cobbler.
@Pittibarlin Жыл бұрын
The main issue being, all the replacement items such as sole/glue/wax etc have been manufactured and transported, likely from China - so it's hardly as eco friendly as it seems. Add to that, the repair likely cost much more than a brand new pair which can be had for about £40 if you shop around. It's false economics to be repairing mass produced tat like Timberlands, these aren't a handmade pair of Cleverly's, they're just cheap mass poo produced fashion boots. If they'd been thrown away, they'd have served their purpose after 33 years, most of which would have seen them unworn as a pair of Timbs are lucky to last a year with regular wear, and soles don't disintegrate like that without years and years of oxidisation and neglect. If people bought better to begin with, things would last much longer. That's the real issue - fast fashion. Cheap trash that falls apart which usually isn't worth getting mended at all. If you're English, think of it as Triggers broom. It's no longer the same broom if you keep on adding new parts, which nullifies the recycling aspect when you're using things like rubber and glue, both harmful to the environment in how they're manufactured and transported. They'd have been better thrown away and replaced by a pair of Red Wings or something that'll last a decade at least, and when the time comes to repair, the materials needed are natural. I'm no eco warrior by any means, I barely even recycle, but the old repair don't replace trope often works out worse in the long run. Where did the old sole go? Likely the same landfill the shoes would have gone if they'd been thrown, and leather is biodegradable - so that pair of shoes is now responsible for four rubber soles being in landfill eventually instead of two. Cobblers and tailors benefit from repairing as it's easy money, but the environment doesn't if you really think about it. Dan likely drives to work, then uses electricity/gas whilst there, all of which consumes energy that wouldn't have been used otherwise to fix a cheap pair of shoes that a hobo would turn down.
@opinionsvary Жыл бұрын
In my opinion: Don't know if some of the guy's here really do believe everything the eco nutters say about consumer residential waste all ending in landfills; but most of this waste type is actually incinerated generating from 20% - 32% of the electric utility while the left over scrap metal is used for making road concrete more dense as the ash becomes ashfault filler. Most likely discarded boots will become electricity & never enter a landfill like construction waste. Construction waste often has toxic stuff that shouldn't be incinerated due to concerns with air quality. Lots of stuff now is made from reprocessing residential waste. Old places might still be dumping into fills, at a real economic loss considering how HDPE is becoming the next commercial utility grade plastic for consumption next to PE & ABS. Your #1 & 2 plastic bottles are pretty disgusting considering how many times they've been reprocessed. The next time you drive on ashfaul or see rusty spots in the concrete, think of it as your landfill & not some membrane layered mound like you see in rural areas to help compost the soil - that would be a different way of processing another type of waste.

Ive worn Dr Martens for many many years now but they don't make them as good as they used to. Had a pair of 1460s I wore for about 7-8 years until my Staffie chewed one up (properly tasted like rawhide lol) but was proper gutted so brought a pair of 8 lace steel toecaps, worn them everyday for near 11 years now ❤❤❤ Soles getting a bit thin but Ive changed my walking style as the outside has alot more sole than inside 😂 I reckon I got another year or 2 before a resole ❤

Great job bringing those Timbos back to life. Sadly I've had to chuck more pairs in the trash than I wanted because what few shoe repair shops we had in the area ( Connecticut ) didnt want to touch putting soles on that style of boot. The two shops I knew about have since closed. One was a dedicated shoe repair and the other in an ancient hardware store that offered different services. $152.00 US is a great price to renew those compared to $235.00 + tax US for new here right from Timberland online.

You should sell those Sexy Dan mugs. And i'm barely even joking, that's a business opportunity and a half man! :'D EDIT: Wrote this before you mentioned the selling bit. Anywhere between 30-40$. And honestly, that's because i know how much it can take to produce and ship those. Realistically 20-25, but that's probably an unreasonable ask depending on where you're producing and shipping from. Let's just say that if it's under 45 excluding shipping, _you're selling to at least one of us. ;)_

Great video. Dan did the same for my classic leather Timberlands a couple of years ago - definitely worth it. They're serving me well, although they're only c20 years old. And the benefit (which Dan didn't mention in this vlog) is that they can be easily repaired with the worn out sole being easily removed and a new one glued to the stitched midsole.
