When i watch this i feel so connected to our ancestors. One of my uncles in Tobago went to jail for stick fighting in the old days.

Every Trini should watch some stick fighting. It's our roots. It's our culture.

In Brazil (in a community descended fr0m an old settlement of runaway slaves), there is the jogo do pau, which inherits the name of Portuguese art (and some influences), but in general it is more like this Kalinda. They must have common roots. In the past it was linked to capoeira, but today it is almost forgotten. you can check it out in the videos:: Jogo do pau entre Manuel Seabra e Jorge Fernandes Versos e Cacetes. O jogo do pau na cultura afro-fluminense

This is great tradition...in Carriacou it is done

@@cjoseph65 I am from the Tri Island State of Grenada Carriacou and Petite Martinique but luv Carriacou. To answer your questions, no. Stick fighting used to be practise in Grenada up until the 80s, mainly rural parishes...however, Carriacou and Petite continue to practise lots of tradition. But I am blown away by the video.even traditional songs...if you search on here you will find a couple of Carriacou...

@@hugotrades5120 Stick fighting was done in The Bahamas as well. But they were more like clashes between different Junkanoo groups when they ran into each other on Baystreet. However there was some form of Mock fighting that took place, maybe similar to Danmye in Martinique, however, I never read any details about it. A lot of old practices faded. There was Senegalese style wrestling mentioned in Barbados in the 1650s. Music and large crowds were said to be present, no different than I am seeing in this video.

I wonder how something like polish saber style stick fighting would do against this style
@@blakegebauer76 Well I think the polish style would win considering it actually is for combat while the stick fighting in this video is more of a ritual
@TonyMishima923 жыл бұрын
@@blakegebauer76 It depends because they appear to have different rules. If it's a point system match where you strike anywhere on the body, then the Polish Saber style definitely wins. But the Kalinda style generates more power in their swings from their stance, so a Kalinda practitioner would win if it was a contest of who could knock the other person out.

ChaosMechanica : It’s simple, If you can’t brakes don’t play, whoever gets “buss head” looses, if no “ buss head” the person who was more aggressive wins the fight.

@@cjoseph65 why do they keep clinching? Is there a certain amount of rounds?
@isaactuberoso44433 жыл бұрын
@@ChaosMechanica they clinch because when you go into an attack, if you don't land it you going an get your head bust by his retaliation. So you clinch him to stop the stick from coming down. See how they covering they head?
