Trinitarian Theology from Scripture Alone! (SPT07)

The Leiden Synopsis (Disputation 7, par. 33ff) argues that we only know God as Trinity because of revelation. This is not only the standard Protestant view, but the view of the mainstream Christian doctrinal tradition at large. Fred Sanders and Ryan Hurd talk through this section of the Leiden Synopsis and explain how it's helpful for keeping the doctrine of the Trinity from sounding like weird secret knowledge derived from ambiguous traces and clues.

The trinity denies the death and resurrection of Christ. If Christ is god, then he can’t die and if he didn’t die then he didn’t die for sin. It is added human philosophy that was created by Satan to get people to deny the death of Christ, and BOY did it ever work!

You cannot "learn the trinity from the scriptures alone" because the trinity is not in the scriptures. The trinity is just YOUR MISUNTERSTANDING, debunked by Jesus. Jesus is not part of a trinity, He says to be only with the Father, people won't meet a trinity but just Father and Son (see the gospels).

They are bad actors who reject the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is what allows us to properly interpret and apply Scripture.

That is just to say that, although the Trinity is arrived at through Scripture alone, there are people who misinterpret Scripture. The correct reading of Scripture was done by the "proper ecclesiastical body" of the ancient Church of the successors of the Apostles, which upheld the Scriptural doctrine in its early ecumenical councils. The councils did not invent a new doctrine, but taught what the Scriptures teach, making it more explicit by employing certain technical and philosophical language. This was necessary because of the widespread influence of those who twisted the Scriptures so as to deny what they clearly teach.
