Triops and Fairy Shrimp

We drove up a mountain road on the east side of Bisbee, Arizona and found a temporary pool with triops and fairy shrimp in it. At one point a tiger beetle flew into the water and quickly made its exit. It's easy to imagine humans through time sitting at water's edge being fascinated by these ancient crustaceans living out their seemingly impossible lives in temporary pools that might only have water in them for a few weeks or months.
Both of these organisms are sold as pets. The eggs can dry out for very long periods, as they do in nature, and hatch with the mere addition of water.

We were keeping our eyes open for them all of monsoon season and stopped at a bunch of pools when Rus from @aquarimax was down here. I read that there are some winter fairy shrimp to keep an eye out for and now suddenly we have rain in the forecast for the next couple days. Fingers crossed!

No fairy shrimp, but Japanese rice paddies are full of these triops every summer.

I was trying to explain what a vernal pool was To a friend. He thought I was Making it up. We have clam shrimps in ours. Triops are very rare in Scotland.

3 months or so for the triops but they'll drop eggs. You let those dry out for a while and then they'll hatch after you wet them down again.

I used to fell bad thinking "Man, these used to be the most diverse animal family ever" but, at least a type of them made it, can't be said for stuff like hallucigenia, which is so odd to the fact that professionals are almost positive our depictions are not accurate simply because whatever type of lifeform existed has no concept or bearing right now. My bet is on mobile proto-coral.
