TRIP REPORT | First Time on Austrian Premium Economy | Vienna to Tokyo | AUSTRIAN Boeing 777

Austrian Trip Report flying from Vienna to Tokyo onboard one of the Austrian Airlines Boeing 777, in Premium Economy class, on a beautiful afternoon in Europe and morning in eastern Asia.
A quite disappointing flight on the Austrian Airlines Premium Economy Class from Vienna to Tokyo. I'm really sorry to say again not good things about Austrian Airlines... but today's flight was below average for a Premium Economy Class. The seats are generally not bad... but the service was really poor. Just slightly better compared to Economy Class.
We took from rwy 29 in Vienna and quickly made a 180° turn to the left to start our route to Tokyo. We flew over Bratislava and Budapest and then we set course towards Bucharest and Varna. We crossed the Black Sea in direct course to Türkiye. Georgia and Azerbaijan were the 2 next countries we flew over.
The Sunset occurred when we were approaching Baku, next to the Caspian Sea. But it was exactly at that moment when a passenger started to feel bad and a doctor was required among the passengers. Luckily, a diversion and emergency landing were not required this time. Do you remember when we had to do it on the Lufthansa Boeing 747?
After a long night onboard, the Sunrise started over Beijing. From there we entered the Yellow Sea, flying in direct course to Seoul. Before reaching Seoul, still over the sea, we were able to see some glimpses of North Korea. The views of South Korea were great, including the downtown and its main airport. From Seoul, we flew directly to Tokyo, where we landed 20 minutes ahead of the schedule.
About the onboard service, there were 2 services on this 12-hour flight: dinner and breakfast. The dinner was the worst one I've seen on any Premium Economy so far. No taste, no flavor. Plain and ugly food. Nonse ingredients combination. Terrible.
The breakfast service was offered around 1h45min before landing. The taste was definitely better than the dinner, but it had again the main defect of Lufthansa Group catering: the size was ridiculous.

This video reminded me how my favourite thing about arriving at a Japanese airport is how the workers take the suitcases immediately as they come down and line them up perfectly in a row all the handles up. 😊

Good report with interesting impressions of the city of Tokyo at the end of the video. Years ago, I was on a tour with Cathay Pacific in Japan and also experienced Tokyo. Lots of people, great culture, mostly friendly people, and trains always on time. Thank you for sharing.😀

Great video! I flew Austrian's 777 from VIE-EWR in premium economy as well and it was super disappointing. 4 hour maintenance delay, terrible food, no wifi, limited IFE selection and just the whole experience felt like there was a ton of cost cutting and all of my long hauls on Lufthansa metal were better than this. Not to mention they gave everyone a 10 euro food voucher, but the only places where it was valid was in the Schengen gates in a different terminal or in the arrivals hall.

For instance, Delta in your previous video and I might think that it's same for Austrian, too.

Thank you for showing Austrian direct flights to Japan. Now its sure we made better call with EK - 400Eur cheaper per person juat the transfer making it longer. On a side note,looks you still have your gf from Slovakia. Missing the old trip reports with trains and lowcost carriers from the region. The channel moved forward a lot. (more food complaints too) You did a jump in level the past years. Great work

Premium economy of Austrian seems nice. The food looks so un-appetizing. So happy to see some footage of Tokyo. Been about 20 years since I last went to this great city. 27:18, amazing how uniformly aligned the luggage was on the belt. So easy to pull out. Never seen that before. Well! They are Japanese. Amazing videography Lucas. The Samsung galaxy S21 is just an amazing piece of technology. Overall thoroughly enjoyable trip report. Europeans generally enjoy visiting Japan and South Korea since these countries experience a temperate climate with four seasons. It's a shame that Austrian Airlines aren't upgrading to the 777X

Personally speaking, I guess reviews for PE from different airlines is the most practical ones. This type of review really helps a lot of people making the disicion whether to choose economy or PE. I'm sure it's up to each person to decide either PE is worthy or not, but the reviews of PE give people a clear idea of what they are getting from the extra money paid. As always, very well done video. Thanks for sharing. The meal looks really not special, at least in the video. Not better than other economy dinner. it looks like a huge piece of canned tuna.....

Thanks so much! Glad that you found it interesting. The only reason why it could be worth on a flight like this one was the extra space and the fact that we were travelling as couple, so having the seat config 2-4-2 was very appreaciated. Besides that, there's no reason to fly PE with Austrian in my opinion.

Overall it looked quite sad. Especially that there was no curtain separating premium from economy 👎 to Austrian But a great trip report nonetheless 😊

Great report. Is really sad, what the 2000´s brought to flying. Ryanair (i hate them) is the leader, people fly like cows in trains, companies like Austrian are totaly confused, try to cut the cost in every corner and what used to be nice in 1990´s is now completely gone. But the mass wants this, overcrowded small planes with 198 seats, no comfort, no service, "low" prices, strange...

Well, there's a rise in premium seats... every airline is now installing premiem eco cabins, extra legroom seats... an people want to pay for them. There's market for all if done well.

To be clear: there is no wall separating premium eco with economy? I selected this airline for a flight to china specifically for that reason and instead of Swiss (where there is no separating).

Lo que más me ha gustado de este vídeo ha sido el trip que nos has hecho de Tokio y lo que menos el catering que os han servido en el avión , me parece vergonzoso que sea ese el menú de Austrian para vuelos de largo radio y mas aun en clase turista premium debería ser algo mejor. No me extrañaría nada que si hay alternativas visto esto la gente se vaya a otra compañía. Un cordial saludo y buen fin de semana.

Hmmmm… is that the best meal service they can offer in Premium Economy… I’m sure they can do much better, to be honest with you. As always, thanks for sharing your experience… =) EDIT: one last comment, is Austrian the low cost airline in the Lufthansa group?

Thanks so much! Austrian should be a flag carrier within the Lufthansa Group... The Lufthansa Group low-cost is Eurowings... We'll fly with them long-haul in Premium Eco this year... so we'll be able to compare :)

actually i mostly never have problems with jet lag that much. yes, wenn i flew to L.A. i went to sleep at 9pm instead of 11 but that's it. maybe it's because I work in a job with variing shifts :D lucky me

What I think about this meal in Premium Eco? - Whenever I eat such a selection of international products, I wonder where they are really from and how ecological they are. Which cheese is this exactly, from which producer, are the grapes from Austria or from the opposite corner of the world, do they serve me premium eco ("bio") meat or just the cheapest of the cheapest from wholesalers ?? I would like to encourage airlines to use local food on board and use this in marketing.
