[TRIP REPORT] Gotthard Panorama Express Journey Across The Alps To Lugano In First Class

The Gotthard Panorama Express operated by SBB is one of the lesser known panoramic train journeys you can do in Switzerland. It is also a bit more exclusive, because the train consist only of first class coaches. The journey brings you to the other side of the Alps via the old Gotthard Railway from 1882 with some interesting sights along the route, but is it worth your time and money? Let's find out when we catch the southbound train from Arth-Goldau to Lugano!

Thank you so much! I hope you'll have an amazing trip to Europe in 2023. Definitely get an Eurail pass if you are including Switzerland in your itinerary. What I like to do on these "rail trips around Europe" is to plan 75% of the trip and leave the other 25% up to decide when travelling. It might sound daunting, but the flexibility sometimes brings you to places in the world you never thought of visiting. Anyways, good luck planning out your trip!

I think the Bernina Railway will still win it when it comes to the most scenic railway in Switzerland. Nevertheless the Gotthard Railway is also quite nice, but not as spectacular as the route of the Bernina Express or Glacier Express :)

if you had to choose between Glacier, Bernina, Gotthard and Golden Pass, which one would you chose? btw can you really save with the interrail?

My personal choice would be the Bernina Express. You'll get the most impressive and varied view out of all the panorama trains in Swiss. The Bernina and Glacier Express actually overlap each other on the St. Moritz to Chur section, but both their "unique sections" are still very much worth your time. If you can only do one then I'll definitely recommend the Bernina Express with the Bernina Pass being a bit more spectacular than the Oberalp Pass. Regarding if an Interrail Pass is worth it depends on your itinerary. If your travel plan includes Switzerland then you'll definitely save money. If you travel a lot in France, Spain or Italy then the mandatory reservation fee for trains makes it less ideal, but the general rule for most countries is that buying discounted saver fare tickets months in advance is cheaper, but the Interrail Pass gives you max flexibility to go whenever and wherever you want!
