This is indeed a wonderful train line. Glad you enjoyed it and got some great weather to really soak in the landscape. As a side note: coming out of Luzern you were sat in a "quiet car", as noted on the screen showing the stops right behind you as well as the little sign right next to your table, where it says "quiet zone" in 4 languages with an icon of a finger over a pair of lips doing the "ssh" sign :) Those train cards are intended to be, well, quiet so people can rest and relax in peace and quiet. It's a small but important bit of etiquette on the trains here. Yapping away in those cars as you were doing is considered quite inconsiderate, and some people will actually approach you and ask for quiet which can be a bit awkward. ;)

Beautiful trip, I've done it many times before the base tunnel was built. One thing: It s not the Gotthard Pass route, just the old Gotthard tunnel route. The tunnel goes straight through the Gotthard massif, not up to the pass. You don't even see the Urseren valley, the base valley from where the Gotthard pass takes off.

Nice video. Only the title is misleading. It is not quite the Gotthard Pass (2000 m high with no train) but the Gotthard mountain line with the original tunnel (1000 m altitude). Tte train is a EC250 with maximum 249 km/h (rounded at 250).

Beautiful journey Mark. I nearly did this one last month when I was in Switzerland but ended up going to Zermatt instead. All I will say is the Gornergrat metre gauge railway (heavy snow edition!) is just ridiculous. I still have no idea how or why they built it. I paid CFH 192 for a 2-day pass for unlimited cable cars/Gornergrat rides and somehow it was worth every penny! Cheers.

Thank you for an interesting video, but above all thank you for mentioning prominently the SWISS TRAVEL PASS. I have been visiting Switzerland almost every year since 1971. The Swiss Travel Pass for tourists was introduced in 1972. Ever since 1972 I have, on my visits to Switzerland, bought a First Class Swiss (Travel) Pass. The STP may appear expensive when compared to Interrail, but it is A FAR BETTER TICKET IF YOU WANT TO SEE SWITZERLAND. The STP gives free travel on ALL Swiss Public Transport (Bus,Train. Tram, Boats, Cable Cars to high lying villages). Only purely tourist lines up mountains are excluded. On those the STP usually gives 50% discount.

Just remember to check if your train will travel trough the base tunnel. A few InterRegios and InterCity trains travel trough the tunnel again. To be sure I can recomend the "IR26 Treno Gottardo" operated by the "Südostbahn". This train always travels over the old mountain line. You can board the train in Lucerne but it does end in Locarno and not Lugano. They use the "RABe 526", an absoluteley wonderful and quiet train.

I love Swiss Trains and I had 1st class Swiss Rail Pass back in Feb 2020. I took the classic route on one of the regional trains that normally are the only ones covering the route. I had the train almost to myself as of course most people take the fast trains through the tunnel when it is open. I loved Locarno and was lucky enough to have a free upgrade to a balcony room over looking Lake Maggiore. Locarno boasts over 300 days of Sunshine a year. I came into Lugano from Italy on the private railway from Domodssola through the mountains and was included in the pass. Looking forward to other lines you rode. They say you should visit in the winter and the summer as there scenery is so different. Lucerne to Montreux is a fantastic line and any line through a valley.

0:02 The Potico is from the 2. First you spot it from beneath - tunnel - then at the same height - tunnel - and from above… I would recommend a round-trip from Lucern by ship to Viznau , climbing the Rigi mountain by rack-rail going down with the other line to Arth-Goldau and back to Lucern with the SBB ,with good weather it is just a great journey…!

Back in Vevey you could either continue to Lausanne and then Geneva or take the Train to the mountains canton of Valais through Montreux, depending what direction you want to continue.

I absolutely liked my ride on a Giruno when I tried it last year between Zurich and Bologna (that train was suddenly canceled as a result of the closure of the Gotthard base tunnel, luckily I travelled a few days before that). Yup, I agree that the CHF 5 for a coffee is a bit pricey but the fact that you can have a proper dining car it something great (I had once lunch on it between Geneva and Zurich).
