At 18:32: You can really see the 717's roots back to the DC-9 and MD-80 in that cockpit design (especially the eyebrow windows). One thing that's pretty cool about the Dash 8 family is being able to physically see the landing gear. Pretty unique for regional service... Pretty long displaced threshold on takeoff from Newark, too. Is it just me, or do they send every RJ you're on to 11/29 for landing...
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Stlweather The 717 is basically a DC-9 with new engines and a glass cockpit. Really cool little plane--I actually got to fly on one last month. And 11/29 is no coincidence. Any time Lambert ATC has planes landing from the west, they send most Delta/United arrivals to 11/29 since it has the shortest taxi to Concourse A. If taking off to the West, they send United/Delta there for takeoff. All other airlines will pretty much always use the 2 old runways for takeoff and landing regardless of the direction.

Flew a few Horizon air Q400's a few years ago. Really enjoyed them. Whole flight experience is much smoother than a normal jet especially the take off and landing. Just tends to be louder and I felt like my feet had been vibrating on a belt sander for a few hours.

You talk about the fairly long flight on the ERJ-145 from EWR to STL. A few years ago when I was flying back to ORF from MCI, I flew the SAME ERJ-145 from MCI to EWR, had a "change of planes" in EWR and got back on the same plane. That was on Continental before United bought them out. You're right, though. That's a long flght on a small plane

Nice video! Hey, out of curiosity, I was reading your trip advisor reviews and I was wondering if the Best Western Plus Inn At The Peachtrees place was going to get a hotel tour? (I found the review hilarious.)

+MGIII Oh yeah! That was the single craziest experience I've ever had at a hotel in my life, and I got everything you saw in the review on video. Never really taken the "hidden camera" approach before, but I started after so many things went wrong. I even got that employee's reaction when I pulled a hair off a pillow right in front of him. Can't wait to get that one edited/uploaded. I'm beyond shocked that place has a 4-star average on TripAdvisor.

It's outside security, so you'd have to go back through the TSA when you reach the other terminal. The bus stays inside the secure zone.

+Daniel Sirota I can see EWR being a good experience if you use terminal C. Especially compared to some of the current terminals at JFK and LGA (I'm looking at you, central terminal), terminal C at Newark is one of the nicest facilities in the NYC area.

Try flying into PHF - Newport News/Williamsburg. Cost wise is about the same and it's north of the bay - you don't have to worry about crossing under Hampton Roads on I-64. Most of my relatives back there are on the penninsula - and PHF is far more convenient.

I sure hope United plans to upgauge that 145 to at least an E170 with their new push to get with the times and reduce their 50 seaters. You'd have to imagine there is enough demand for all the connections available at EWR to justify a larger aircraft.
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
+WindowSeatFlyer STL-EWR usually gets E-170s a few times per day. I actually like the ERJ, but it just wasn't designed with 2.5 hour flights in mind--from a passenger comfort point of view, anyway.
@WindowSeatFlyer8 жыл бұрын
+The Elevator Channel You know, I haven't even flown on an ERJ since American dehubbed STL, so I guess I cannot speak to the "enjoyability" myself. I try to go all carryon every flight, so I avoid the regional jets at all costs. Otherwise I probably would give the ERJs a try again. After all, having the single seat on the left side is a great perk.
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
WindowSeatFlyer Gate-checking a carry-on isn't really that bad from my experience. Waiting in the jetway for a few minutes isn't exactly ideal, but it still beats baggage claim. But yeah, there's a lot to love about the ERJ. The single seat is awesome, the windows are huge, and boarding/deplaning is super-fast since there's only 50 people. It's a great little plane with a nearly spotless safety record. But the lack of legroom (due to the curvature of the tiny cabin) and small seats start to wear on me after about 90 minutes. By contrast, the CRJ-200 starts to wear on me as soon as I sit down :)
@WindowSeatFlyer8 жыл бұрын
Ha! Yes, those CRJs leave a lot to be desired. I haven't flown one since 2012, luckily. Pretty much all 737s and MD-80s for me. I did just fly a Dreamliner though. Talk about big windows! Amazing aircraft. You ought to catch one on a domestic route someday. It is worth the diversion (ORD-DFW-STL for my trip).
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
+WindowSeatFlyer Certainly hope I can catch one some day. I'm actually flying on my first-ever 717 next week, so I have that to look forward to.

I'm not really that surprised by the delay you had ar EWR. Luckily you didn't have as bad of an experience like how I did and I recognized where you were in C as I was trapped in C for 8 hours that day wondering around and no elevators or trains to ride. Haha. The bus between A and C at EWR I did like as you are in fact almost on the tarmac. And obviously EWR was not designed to have security checkpoints back in the day.
@SamSitar8 жыл бұрын
+MKE Aviation And Elevators EWR is a chokepoint.
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
+MKE Aviation And Elevators Yeah, it's an outdated design. It would be awesome if they rebuilt terminal B, connected it to C, and United moved their existing operation in A over. Would make the experience so much nicer. Though I think it's generally a good idea to avoid all 3 NYC airports for connecting flights.

I have a question which may or may not be dumb. But anyway... what is it like to fly on a turboprop plane vs a turbofan engine plane (jet engine)? I've flown on a B737 and CRJ700 (B737 was Southwest going to LA) and Crj700 was United going to Grand Rapids..is there a difference, say, how it flies, or how it feels being on it? i know this sounds like a dumb question but I like planes and I'd like to know since i've never been on a turboprop.
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Hannah Arocha It's a little hard to describe. Since you're moving slower (and turboprops are generally smaller), air currents are a lot more noticeable--especially right after takeoff and before landing. I also love how cruising altitude is lower so you get a much better view. The Q400 flies more like a jet since it's so big and fast, but there's still a noticeable difference.
@DanTheMan_188 жыл бұрын
+Hannah Arocha I think I can help here. B737s are in the category named "Jumbo Jets", which is just like how it sounds. a CRJ700 is a much smaller plane. I've felt differences from an A320 to a E190, so my guess is that a CRJ is more turbulent than a B737.
@hannaharocha78118 жыл бұрын
***** yeah when I was in the crj there was mild turbulence. But we were flying above clouds most of the time, and coming back home we actually flew around thunderstorms

Odd the bridge/tunnel system spans 90% of the river, then tunnels the middle 10%. My guess is there wasn't bedrock in the middle, and went that route. Weird.
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
+georgef551 It's for ships. The bridge itself is very low to the water, so it dips into a tunnel deep enough to allow for ships to pass overhead.
@georgef5518 жыл бұрын
***** Hmm. Still makes me wonder why they just didn't tunnel most of it instead.
@TheElevatorChannel8 жыл бұрын
georgef551 Ah, I see. That is a good question, so I looked into it a bit. Hard to find a concise answer. Apparently they were afraid to build high bridges ships could pass under because they could disrupt Navy operations in the event of a collapse. So a tunnel was necessary, but much of the area they needed to cross was a shallow marsh. Hence, the "bridge-tunnel" was born. There's only 10 in the entire world, and 3 are in the Norfolk area--including the world's longest at 17 miles. Pretty cool.
@georgef5518 жыл бұрын
***** Strange. I guess if the land didn't allow a full tunnel, this works.
