I've been guided to that address that isn't the refuge before! Go back to that location in December and photograph Sandhill Cranes, you won't be alone. I'll probably go there five times, maybe even ten times this winter. They will close it and you work from the gazebo (that was behind you at 5:25) and boardwalk beside it. That setup will work just fine for the cranes, Maybe even without the TC. Nice to see you out with your long lens!

David Last week I went to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands to photograph wildlife mainly Egrets , Pelicans, Osprey and I managed to get a picture of a Perignon Falcon perched in a tree. I was using the Pentax K3 Mk 111 & the Pentax 55- 300 PLM A light fast focusing Pentax lens on the crop sensor camera. It is the first time I have been to the wetlands since Heart surgery in June and I am like you out of practice most of my pictures made better landscape pictures with wildlife in them than birds in flight.

I open the Zf RAW files in Affinity, pretty nice editing program
@davidsaylors3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I need to check into that program now... I am currently using the Nikon proprietary software to process them and it works well. I would prefer a nice raw editor so this just might solve my problems.

For mammals (not birds) the zf + 500mm pf is my favorite setup! Probably because I don't own a z8 or z9 😅But also it is very lightweight and don't forget the incredible high iso capabilities. I only use a tc for late in the day, and go dx mode sometimes around sunrise. Hope you like the camera so far. Best, Jacob

I love the camera. I just got back from a 10 day trip to Croatia and it was my only camera. Shot the whole trip on the 50mm f1.8 S and never looked back. I now run into gear paralysis since I now have three favorite machines… haha

Nice...Love to see you mix up different types of photography....Having a blast. That's concerning that Darktable hasn't yet supported the ZF. With the high popularity of that camera, you'd think that would be addressed asap. Might be an indicator that the developers of darktable might not be as committed to development of the programs as they once were. Once of my reasons why I haven't jumped off Adobe yet (even though I'm tempted to)
@davidsaylors3 ай бұрын
I have never been too deep in the pool with Adobe so it wasn’t a big deal to leave them for me. I do miss a couple of features that Lightroom had though… That noise reduction algorithm was nice. Darktable works well enough for me now though…A than those raw files out of the Zf. Since Leica uses DNG format for their raw files, I don’t have any problems with them. Haha

I know a buyer for that 500 if you decide to go to another lens 😂😂😂 I think you can make it work, especially with the T/C on larger birds, deer, elk etc..
@davidsaylors3 ай бұрын
I bet you do know where I could dump that lens...lol. It seems that I just need to get a different camera ... again... if I want to shoot wildlife... lol. That will surly fix my problem.
@bassangler733 ай бұрын
@davidsaylors depends on what you want man, If you want a Z mount, I would get a Z8, but you could go budget friendly and find you a good used D500..

I found a solution to get pics of wildlife. Bird Bath and Food then you have no problem plus free fertilizer in the process. Walk with Phil Thach with his Z8 and you will fall in love with it. Wait for the sales and buy refurbished not Gray Market because of still getting a warranty and it has been inspected thoroughly so it is like brand new camera. Lot of software is out there which you pay once and not monthly. Cheers!
